Les Stoodius: Field Journal #3

Burnside. The party's reunited! We got into town last night and headed straight to the Fyre Festival. It turned out that the first night had just started, so we joined in the merriment. Pure chaos ensued... more later.   Right! Before I forget though, there seems to be a pattern in Bobbo's book of nursemaid's tales. There was a pattern poking through and although it took me a while, I realized what it was! The big letters at the start of each paragraph line give a collection of letters that - when rearranged - result in phrases!   1) When the universes were all but smoke   2) and stars only grains   3) in the darkness he awoke   4) order and creation he disdains   5) from chaos his power gains   6) So was born Therysdune   7) destruction the only thing his heart contains   8) Beware the enigma moon   I've only done the first ten pages so far, but given that there's a few more pages left, it looks like there's more to this story.   Therysdune though. That name appears again... Must talk to the Captain.   How I wish how Mr. Tok'ka was around! I hope his task with the innkeeper is bearing fruit... Maybe we can compare notes one day?

Field Notebook #2.5: Reading on the road

Still on the road, still en route to Burnside... I've been trying to read while riding. It's been a bit difficult, as the horse is so skittish following the ambush. Anyhow, I've kept on reading the book of "fairy tales" I received from Bobbo at the Trading Post. There are definitely some patterns and themes that need further attention... Will keep thinking. A code? I have to examine this further. We've another couple of hours to go by all accounts...

Field Journal #2 - On the road

Northern Road. Sunny and a bit breezy, although my allergies are killing me. Now a day and a half out from Burle en route to Burnside. After a relatively uneventful couple of days from Saltmarsh to Burle, we were set upon yesterday afternoon by a gnoll raidpack along the road! Four months ago I hardly would have believed my own tales. What with all that has gone on these past few weeks, I sound like Drunk Todde and his ramblings back in the Meyersen's tavern in Neuw Kirche... Regardless, the forest had overgrown that part of the road furthest from both Burle and Burnside and while the road was clearly visible, new tree growth made if difficult to get a glimpse more than 10-20 yards to either side! We debated trying to go around the Overgrowth via the plains to the west, but decided to chance the forest path as we didn't know how far the new growth continued... I'd heard this strange laughing cry the nigh before last and despite the Cptn's protestations, it turned out I was right - there were things watching us! The gnolls set upon us about 1/4, 1/2 mile into the tangle and it was pure chaos! I was thrown from my horse and everything descended into another frenzy, with arrows whistling by and nets being thrown. Thorongil is truly a master with both blade and bow though, and the Cptn can be quite fierce when the mood strikes him. Thanks to them, we three managed to struggle clear after Thorongil killed their packleader with an arrow (although I did shoot the beast with my hand crosxbow!!). I must continue to note these events down, for no one at the Departement will believe me. Speaking of V, I'm anxious to learn of Dra. Proskouriakoff's response... need to call Mr. Seneschal and Mr. Pavel asap. With any luck there'll be good news and I focus my attention on recording the Fire Festival at Burnside tomorrow (nb. Fyre Festival? Spl'g was unclear from merchant's account in Burle..).

Sitting here in the Lion, eager to get on the road. Mr. Seneschal and Mr. Pavel have already left for Port Verlin with my letter to the Professor in hand. With any luck, she'll be able to provide us with some clue of what might be afoot. Simarchuan?! That's the last sort of thing I expected to hear about, let alone Thorongil having some knowledge of the culture... I must use the trip ahead to see if I can prise something useful out of him, and maybe check with the bookshop owner at the trading post as well.
