Wisps

Wisps are a type of wandering spirits associated with bad luck.

Anatomy & Morphology

Wisps are intangible creatures with no physical envelope. They appear as a fusing of smoke and light that take a particular tint for depending on the types of wisp. They vary in size but never get bigger than a big orcish head. Floating approximately at one meter from the ground, they never stop moving and always appear to be following some kind of magic wind.
A precise analysis of a wisp will reveal in fact to distinct parts of its being, a spheric core made of light revolving on itself and a smoke emitted from that core which surrounds it and seems to undulate like a flame.
Wisps light and smoke colors vary depending on unknown criterias around the world. The most common types of wisps are the Azury Wisp (blue), the Verdant Wisp (green), the Dusk Wisp (orange) and the Violet Wisp (purple).

Sensorial perceptions

Wisps do not seem to have any sensorial perception. It was first believed that they used magic perception to freely move. However, studies showed that they were not attracted nor repulsed by magic sources. They only seem to wander the world, travelling randomly through it.

Special abilities

Wisps possess a weak psychic ability. Physical contact with them will result in a "psychic burn". The pain of being burnt will be felt while no physical injury will appear.

Nature

Only visible during the night, they only seem to wander aimlessly following the disappearance of the sun on the horizon.
Wisps seem to be unconscious beings. They are passive and do not react to external stimulus. A hypothesis has been formed that they actually are conscious but as they do not perceive our plane of existence, they seem passive to us. This hypothesis claim that wisps are actually beings living in another dimension and that the light and smoke we perceive is in fact just a scrap of themselves which can pierce the fabric of our reality. This hypothesis has been refuted by the Sacred Arkian Church as there are only three planes, the mortal plane, the divine plane and the demonic plane. As wisps are nor demonic nor divine by the magic energy emanating from them, they obviously only exist in the mortal plane.

Habitat

As they are wandering spirits, wisps have no habitat.
It was first believed that wisps color was due to their current location as azury wisps are mainly encountered next to bodies of water and verdant ones inside forests but that hypothesis has been proved wrong many times.

Diet

Unknown.
Wisps are very ephemeral phenomenons they seem to appear and disappear without ever feeding.

Demography

Unknown.
Pretty common in the wild, no mean of reproduction or apparition has been found yet for these strange beings. They could actually be more related to magic anomalies than beings.

History

Since the beginning of time, stories of strange lights in the night have always existed. All races and all civilizations acknowledge that wisps are not a fairy tale but an existing being or phenomenon. They are associated with bad luck in general as they are only encountered in the wild during night time and are often followed by other creatures which are attracted to the wisp light or trying to feed on the magical energy it contains.
Some people hunt down wisps for their core which can crystallize into Powerstone after the wisp vanishes.
