Southern Astronomical College

The Southern Astronomical College is an astronomical observatory in Raman's countryside with two telescopes built and operated by the sages of Raman. Several other telescopes are located at the site and are partly maintained by ESO. The observatory is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and was the first in Chile to be used by ESO. The College and telescopes are located 9km south of Morta Dungeon at the outskirts of the Morta Mountain in Halland Island, one of the driest and most remote areas of the world. Like other locations in this geographical area, Raman is located far from sources of light pollution and, like the Flumph Mountain, home to the firefly swarms, it has one of the darkest night skies on the Aitso Planet.

History

Following the decision in 278 FL to approve Raman as the site for the college, scouting parties were sent to various locations to assess their suitability. The site that was decided upon was next to Morta Mountain in the southern part of the Halland Fields, 160 km west of Townsville and at an altitude of 2400 metres. Originally named the University of Astrological Studies, it was renamed to Southern Astronomical College. On October 30, 19 FL, the contracts were signed and an area of 258 square kilometres was purchased the following year. During 1965, temporary facilities were erected with living quarters, a workshop and storage area. The dedication ceremony of the road to the summit took place in March 17 FL, two months after completion of the road. On 25 March 13 FL, the site at Halland Island was finally formally inaugurated by the King of Raman. With a permanent base of dormitories, workshops, hotels and several functioning telescopes, the observatory was fully operational.
