The Pale Wastes

"To go there would be suicide. To try to build a town there would be nothing short of madness." -Lord Arjen Wend; in response to a sailor requesting funds for a settling excursion to the Pale Wastes

Geography

Some people think the Pale Wastes were once a verdant continent with fertile plains and rolling hills. That claim becomes harder to believe the longer you look at it. The Pale Wastes are so named for the vast stretches of gray, barren flatland. Jagged shards of stone stick out from the ground like daggers pointed to the heavens. The only signs of civilization to be found in the Pale Wastes are the forboding and enigmatic cities of the mind flayers. Suffice it to say that these cities would provide no refuge to anyone foolhardy enough to venture into the Pale Wastes.

Fauna & Flora

There is no flora in the wastes- at least, none that are recognizable to most people. What little fauna there is consists of abominable mockeries of life; eldritch and warped in nature. These foul and strange creatures seem not to need to consume food in order to survive. This is to their benefit, as the Pale Wastes can in no way support edible plant life. Even the scattered mind flayer settlements that dot the Pale Wastes require dedicated facilities to keep slaves fed.

Natural Resources

The Pale Wastes have no living trees, so all the mind flayer cities are built purely from stone and metal. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your view of mind flayers), those things are in abundant supply beneath the gray sand of the Pale Wastes. Those enslaved by the mind flayers spend countless hours toiling away in mines, collecting stones that mind flayers need to build more settlements, metals to build weapons, and gemstones to make arcane artifacts.
