Dragon Scale

Dragon scales are a material found almost exclusively in the Ivory Empire. Used in the creation of high-end artifacts and anti-Ether armor, dragon scales are associated with the Imperial Shrine Maiden, and people using dragon scale products are often afforded special privileges in the Empire.

Material Characteristics

Dragon scales are circular in shape, often an inch in diameter, with a somewhat translucent appearance. Each scale is flexible with low plasticity, allowing the scale to flex and return to its original shape. Despite being only a few millimeters thick, scales are capable of resisting piercing actions, and a piece of armor with only a couple layers of scales can resist a stab from a sword. 
Scales exhibit a optical effect similar to labradorescence. Scales are often blue, green, or gray-white in color, though those from the Mire are noted to be darker in color, approaching black or brown at times. It has a pearly luster to it.

Geology & Geography

Dragon scales can be found in only two locations throughout the House: the Dragon's Crypt and the Great Mire. These locations are the resting places of two dragons who died during the events of Ragnarök. Both of these places are incredibly dangerous due to the corrupted Ether in the area. 
Higher quality scales come from the Dragon's Crypt due to the steadily respawning monsters, known as Dragon Remnants, found there. These Remnants are basically pseudo-dragons and grow scales as they "age". Although "older" Remnants are more dangerous, they yield more scales and confer a prestige to the person capable of killing them. 
Scales from the Great Mire are rare and seen as lower quality than those from the Crypt. These scales come from the dragon itself, and they are thoroughly affected by the same curse that created the Mire.

History & Usage

Discovery

The first use of dragon scale armor occurred in 3144 BV. Kovacs Röt wore a shirt made of dragon scales during his campaigns to unite the warring clans that would eventually create the Ivory Empire.

Cultural Significance and Usage

All dragon scales are under the sole control of the Imperial Shrine Maiden, and materials made using dragon scales are used solely by those associated with her. An individual bearing even a single dragon scale will be afforded special privileges compared to even those bearing the emblem of the Regent.
