An Explorations officer is a member of the Union's Explorations sector.
Career
Career Progression
Explorations officers start as trainees, and following a brief basic training, these trainees are placed under the care of more experienced officers. The training teams undergo numerous short-term expeditions to learn the more specialized skills of an Explorations officer. These teams tend to refine the basic maps created by the more experienced, long-term expeditions, though some are tasked with creating preliminary maps to be used in other expeditions.
Perception
Purpose
The primary goal of the Explorations sector, and by extension its officers, is to map and catalogue the environs around the Union. A basic expedition works to map an area and identify landmarks and potential Ancient ruins, while future expeditions may be ordered to further investigate any points of interest. Any Freestater groups are identified, though only the most basic information is gathered.
The Explorations sector also serves as the first line of defense for the Union. Any threats facing the Union will likely encounter an Explorations expedition, and news of that encounter will likely make its way back to Base Camp and then to Central. All Explorations officers undergo a basic military training to assist in this task.
Social Status
With a focus on exploring the wilderness around the Union, Explorations officers are viewed as both courageous and insane.
History
The Explorations sector started as a subset of the Security sector. The Union understood that exploring the environs around the Corbray region is key to securing the survival of the fledgling nation.
David Capaldi badgered the Security sector head, Vietnam, into agreeing to split the Explorations teams into a separate sector. Although reluctant, she eventually agreed in 2922 IA, but she forced him to become the first sector head as revenge.
He established the first Base Camp to the south of the Union and gathered the first members of the sectors from particularly the Security and Procurement sectors. By 2945 IA, the sector had nearly 500 members.
Operations
Dangers & Hazards
Explorations officers face the standard dangers that one might encounter in the wilderness. Officers have been injured and killed by injuries sustained in falls, animal attacks, and malnutrition. Additionally, casualties have occurred in encounters with Freestaters.
