Cave Marker
Cave Markers are used in coral reefs to show where the towns and cities are. The markers are used near every cave entrance to help travelers not get too lost in the reefs. The markers vary in the way they look. The markers can be built out of anything from stone, wood, and bone. How they are built can vary from the culture in the town.
Purpose / Function
The marker is used to show that there is a town in a nearby cave. They can also be used to show routes and pathways. But the markers are normally just used for pointing out cave towns.
Alterations
Over time coral will grow on the stone markers. The coral is sometimes carefully removed to show that it is a marker. Sometimes the stone slabs have to be replaced to make sure that the marker still points to the cave town. Some markers also have lanterns that hang on the slabs.
Architecture
The marker is made out of stone and driftwood that was floating over the water or sunk into the water. Sometimes the markers are large stone slabs stacked on top of each other. With one slab larger and pointing at the cave. Sometimes the markers are built around the cave entrance. These markers are sometimes made out of wood, stone, and large fish bones. The markers are built in a way to show that there are people living in the cave.
History
There was a time when such landmarks were not needed. One day when scouts found other Mer swimming around, trying to find people to trade with. The scouts lead the other mer to one of the cave towns. After this, markers were used to show where towns were.
