The discovery of the Void drive sparked the expansion of humanity across the entire milky way galaxy. Over the last 800 years there have been a number of changes to the Original drive but the entire idea and basis for the technology remains the same. Ripping a giant hole into reality and entering The void before dipping out into realspace again. While not as efficient or safe as the ones used by the Other races of the Alliance , it is very simple compared to them. In recent times however , there have been experiments with Dark matter to provide a new and much safer and efficient method of FTL travel, which would greatly improve the Federations ability to transport troops swiftly, efficiently and stealthily and be able to deploy at a moments notice to much more distant places and become a major factor in turning the tide against the forces of Kerr in the eternal War
Utility
The sigma-Ludwig void drive works by using stored psychic energy inside of it, although recently experiments have been made for using dark matter in its operation.
The stored psychic energy may be further complimented by psychics on board or in the case of the human race, The gestalt psychic effect. This is very useful during catastrophic engine failures where psychics and normal people concentrated their power to get the engine running again. The stored psychic energy is focussed into a region of space where it rips apart the fabric of reality and thus makes a gateway into the void. The same psychic energy is also used during a voidships journey to get back into real space again by focusing a beam of psychic energy to alter reality and make a gateway into the physical realm.
Some people have however found a far more dangerous use of it. By overloading the engines one can make a tremendous psychic schockwave that can annihilate souls and rips apart a large hole into reality from which demons can pour through. In addition any ships caught in the blast are dragged into the void, often their crews being completely slaughtered by the denizens of the void

The sigma void drive is manufactured by using normal psychoconductive materials in the present day. After the initial machine has been done it is loaded with psychic energy from psychics or from any other source of bottled psychic powers.

The void drive is a quite complex tehconlogy as it involves a field that is still quite alien to humans.The people who are operating it must have a good deal of knowledge about the void which is sometimes quite impossible as the void is a chaotic and constantly changing place.
Discovery
The sigma-Ludwig void drive was discovered by Gabriel sigma and Augustus Ludwig after being taught about the void and psychics by the aenarri race. It was first developed when Ludwig concentrated his psychic powers into a normal milankovitch light engine and accelerated it to light speed.
Once inside of it he activated the psychic trigger which tore a large hole into reality. From there he ventured into the void along with sigma,another well known psychic who was present at the calamity centuries ago. After going into the void, Ludwig and sigma along with the rest of the crew began to hear demonic voices and saw strange and twisted forms in their way. ILudwig knew that these were the forces of the breaker so he used his psychic prowess alongside sigma to cast a psychic barrier around the ship.This primitive form of psychic Barrier became the Eden field, a piece of technology that protects crews on voidships from the entities within the void . They didn’t know how to guide the ship well and they left the warp after Ludwig thought it was too dangerous to stay inside of it.They had barely left the star system they were in before being contacted and picked up by aenarri vessels.

An interesting mix of using psychic energy to make your FTL device! Reminds me a bit of 40K stuff to be honest. As I noticed yeah there are parts that need to be worked out, I would suggest putting the Discovery in footnotes in an unique header, it may make the long part in the sidebar more readable at the end! The question though, what's travelling through the void like? Empty space, tripping balls on space-drugs or like going through the butthole of the cosmos with everything wanting to murder you the second they see it? Sounding by the demonic voices it may be not that nice if you aren't prepared...
