Birth & Baptismal Rites
On birth a priest will visit the childs family and give the child a Feromark, a tattoo up their left arm which tells of thier destiny. The child then stays with its parents until all five moons have been full three times since it's birth, where the priest will return and perform the naming ceremony. This is where the priest takes the first half of the 'Birth parent''s name and the second half of the 'Creator parent''s name and combines them to give the child a name. The child is then taken away from the parents and is sent to the childhouse.
Coming of Age Rites
Sixth twelfth fullmoons (3 years): Feroread: A scryer will visit the childhouse and read the destiny of the child written on their Feromark. The child will then be assigned a job and lessons from now on will be done in the schoolhouse and will not include those that do not match their destiny. Transport between the childhouse and schoolhouse will be half completed by minders and half completed by teachers. The child, now a student, is transported by being carried on a chair. To keep the route secret, the child will be blindfolded until inside the schoolhouse. Eigteenth twelfth fullmoons (12 years): Adulthood: The student will be greeted at the schoolhouse by their childhood minders. Their teachers and minders will congratulate them on achieving adulthood and the student must drink holy water that was blessed by the priest at their Feroreading. They must then, to keep the location of the schoolhouse secret, put on a blindfold and will be lead by the teachers and minders to the priesthouse where they will be given the final preperations for their job. If they are to become a teacher or minder they will follow the teachers or minders to the childhouse or schoolhouse, and if they are to become a priest they will stay in the priesthouse. If they have been assigned another proffession they will wait for members f that proffession to arrive, before following them. Twenty-Fourth twelfth fullmoons (18 years): Marriage: The adult will go to the priests and will take the Blood Oath, they will stab themselves in the palm with a blessed knife and the blood will be collected in a sacred bottle. They will then either marry the last person to take the Blood Oath, or they will wait until the next person approaches the priest. The bloods of the two adults will be combined and boiled over an open fire, whilst the couple say the rituals of binding. When this is complete the two will return to the priest where they will recieve thier partners Feromark on their right hand. After this, the destiny and blood of the two will be linked, however before they can be married they must drink half of the combined blood. After this, the blood and destiny mixes, creating two new destinys, one in each adult. These are now parents, as in 9 months they will each give birth to a child. Future children may be born, however this is often seen as tabboo and somehting which is only done by 'Grounders'
Funerary and Memorial customs
Upon death of one member of a married couple the other member will take their partners body up to the surface, where they will carry their body out to sea and throw both the body and themselves in the water. If the deceased is not married then a ember of the public who also is not married is selected at random and must take on this responsibility.
