This article is a work-in-progress. It's basically me spilling my inspiration of the Taboo Devils in hopes for some feedback about the general idea. In future, I want to give names, alternative forms, and distinguishable personality traits to each Taboo. As well as compelling information that could allow a DM to use one or more Taboo as a possible villain in a campaign.
More information will follow about the Devils' Storm and the current state of each region. I am also reworking my map, particularly the East Continent, which I haven't posted about yet. Below includes tidbits about what's going on in the East. (Spoilers: It ain't pretty).
The Panoptic Depraver and the Devils’ Storm
The Panoptic Depraver, collequally called the Devil Mother, is the strongest fiend and ruler of the Halja. Little is known about her, as she has not left Halja since the Time of the Eternals. However, her strength grows for every soul that is contracted to a Devil. And every Devil is contracted to her. It is assumed her goal is to remake every Rondure in the image of Halja, so that all power must go through her.
The Panoptic Depraver is called the Devil Mother because of her children, the Twelve Taboos, whom roam Adazuri on her behalf and for their own personal depravities. Although some of the Taboos have occupied the Mortal Rondure over the centuries, the Devils’ Storm began when all Twelve Taboos descended on Adazuri at once.
It was unclear why every Taboo and their minion armies descended upon Adazuri simultaneously. However, when the Western Continent neared victory, they received their answer from the Taboo, Invidious. In the middle of battle with Alykin, Champion of Adazuri, The Invidious broke into a soliloquy about her family. The Devil Mother wanted to conquer the Mortal Rondure and later all of the Rondures of the Gods, collecting each soul for herself. She decreed that her children would dominate Adazuri. And the Taboo who collected the best quality and quantity of Souls would receive the Mortal Rondure to rule as they pleased.
Halfway through the speech, Alykin ran The Invidious through with her sword. This defeat, coupled with the current Demon rebellion in Halja, ended the Devils’ Storm. Although if the Devil Mother and her army are able to retain control over the Demons, she will surely turn her sights back to the Mortal Rondure. So we must always stay vigilant.
The Twelve Taboos and Their Domain
East Continent
The Corrupter: Night Curse Forest
The eldest of her children. The Corrupter is known to twist nature and the nature of Folk. Alternative forms of poisonous black smog or an ash gray elf. The Corrupter conquered what was once the Twilight Forest on the Eastern Continent. It is now known as the Night Curse Forest. There, trees have twisted and grown so as to block out nearly all sunlight as they slowly rot from the ground up. Vampire and Lycanthrope Curses in the Night Curse Forest are impossible to cure. However, hope comes with the Moon Goddess, who protects the elven civilization that lives there. It is believed that the love of the Forest God caused the forest ground to break free of the curse and float above the Night Curse Forest. The Corrupter cursed the Forest God to sleep beneath what was left of the forest grounds and never feel the light of the Moon Goddess again.
The Rapacious: Kingdom of Zuvmurt
Twin of The Devourer. Alternative form of a large, red Dragonborn with black wings and horns. The Rapacious was successful in defeating The Kingdom of Zuvmurt, located on the Eastern Continent. He thrives on exploiting the greedy nature of those in power, driving them to obsess over more wealth to the point of their doom. Nobles worship The Rapacious and are rewarded for doing so; however, as punishment for not immediately bowing to his power, The Rapacious demands that two nobleborn—chosen by him—must fight to the death each month. The one that loses gives up their soul to him. The Rapacious can always be found at this tournament, sitting in a gold throne of emeralds constructed solely for him. Daily sacrifice tournaments take place amongst the prisoners and slaves of Zuvmurt. The Rapacious takes little notice of them, happy to allow his minions to collect the defeateds’ souls. However, he is known to visit the strongest of the winners and form a contract with them. Offering them untold riches in exchange for their soul after death.
The Devourer: Northern Plains
Twin of the Rapacious. Although she and the Rapacious often work together, she does not revel in public displays as much as her twin. Alternative form of a giant worm. The Rapacious has taken over the northern plains of the East Homelands. Her growing influence has slowly crept upon the farmlands, now a large swath of the Kingdom is a wasteland where no plant can grow. If enough Folk do not cross into the Wastelands, she begins consuming more farmland in search of souls. Folk accused of even the smallest of crimes are forced to spend three days in the Wastelands. If they survive, they are absolved of the crime, their soul thought to be too pure to be eaten by The Devourer. She devours the Folk she catches in the Wastelands and their souls are transported to Halja through her stomach. The Narcissist: Mountains and Southern Grasslands
The Narcissist, who attempted to take over the mountains and southern grasslands of the East Continent, was killed by his own army. Humans made a pact with the Narcissist to fight in his army in exchange for greater powers. (This well-known pact transforms Folk into Orcs—if done by one of the 12 Taboos and Goblinoids for weaker Devils). The children of these newly turned Orcs—full-blooded Orcs who should have still be under the control of their parents contract—instead killed the Narcissist and claimed the Plateaus as the Free Orc Society. The Orc Army is now helping to defeat the Rapacious.
The Callous: True South Empire
The Callous is believed to have attacked the True South Empire. However, as their borders are completely closed and well-guarded, little is known about what happened. Folk assume The Callous was defeated because the True South Solider Missionaries still traverse the Eastern Continent, intent on wiping out magic and seeking other humans to join their cause.
West Continent
The Inimicus: Barren Bluffs
The Inimicus thrives on creating wars between Folk and sowing mistrust between those who are different. He is the second eldest son of the Mother Devil and took up residence in the South long before the Devils’ Storm. He is still a powerful foe today, controlling a large army of Orcs, which fight demons and any other Folk who impede on his territory. The Sadist: Just Desert
The Sadist attacked what is now the Just Desert. He takes the form of a handsome human whose body is covered in scars. Those who survived a meeting with him have said he thrived on twisting Folks’ minds so that they would physically and psychologically torture themselves and others. It is thought that he is still in the Desert, although none have seen him since the Fall of the Devils Storm.
The Invidious: Northern Knolls, Westerly Union, and Emerald Islands
The Invidious attempted to lay claim to the Northern Knolls, down into what is now Westerly Union, and across to the Emerald Islands. In battle, she transformed into a giant yellow snake with flashing green eyes. At other times, she looked like a young, beauty pageant toddler. The Invidious had a tendency to play with her victims before attacking. Or complain about her siblings and how easy it would be to act as a ‘simple-minded mortal’. Between her time ordering minions to conquer the land, The Invidious enjoyed using Folk bodies to perform “Live Mortal Puppet Shows”.The Desecrater: Whisper Weald and Verdant Mountains
He was known to defile sacred locations and encourage Folk to disrespect their deities or ancestors before. He sowed discord between families and within communities. His alternative form was that of an Angel. The Elves of the Whispering Weald and Dwarves of the Southern Mountains joined forces to kill Him.
Other Regions
The Wretched: Arctic Boreal
The weight of the Wretched’s sorrow has engulfed much of the Arctic Boreal. Even the warmer areas of the continent experience freezing weather. The Wretched will sometimes take the form of a young woman or girl in distress to lure others near. Her favorite souls are said to be those who have lost all hope. The Wrathsome: Gleaming Archipelago
He attacked the Gleaming Archipelago. However, he was not aware of the Obsidian Dragon that resided in the Volcano. One of the first destroyed in the Devils’ Storm. Some believe that The Wrathsome may still be alive, as his angry howls are purported to be heard near the volcano.
The Chimera: Unknown
Little is known about them. They create delusions and impact psychosis in Folk. However, their presence was hidden during the Devils’ Storm. It is assumed they are still alive, possibly on the Western Continent, or aiding the Devil Mother with the Halja Demon War.
The first bit is quite interesting lore-wise for one to read. It does not describe, however, the war itself and it seems like the Western Continent had little struggle. I see the seeds of adventure in the descriptions of each Taboo and each of them is interesting. I hope the players will have fun with them! From what I read about these it seems like they do have distinct personalities. It would be helpful perhaps for a DM to have a list beside each Taboo, but the players should probably not have it. As for the whole idea, I feel it is well thought out and fits everything. Each Taboo has its mind and objective, which is not fully seen as of yet I believe and they are moldable to be usable for a DM in a campaign, as you seem to want. That is all I can think of for now. Good article!
