Pontifex Kaewenta

The Pontifex Kaewenta, or the Pontiff of Kaewen, is Naeron's highest religious authority. (Kaewen is the capital of Naeron, one of the Four Regions)
Appointed for life, the Pontiff is the most powerful figure in Naeron after the Monarch (some say he even rules Naeron through the Monarch, yet uttering such rumours in public is a risky affair).
As the highest representative of the Church of the Scarlet Flame, he has the ear of all lords and rulers in Naeron. Those who believe follow his edicts without question; the few in Naeron who don't believe fear him and his bishops enough to not question the Church's influence in public.
Over the past centuries, after the creation of the Church (who's history is told elsewhere), the Pontiff's role in society grew from someone to look to for solace in hard times to a center of power. Nowadays no lord will marry without the Church's blessing; no city will appoint a major that is not favored by the Pontiff. Even the Monarch will consult with the Pontiff for all matters of state, especially those pertaining to interaction with the other Regions.
Having consolidated his power in Naeron, the Pontiff is always trying to extend that influence to the other Regions. Since they adhere to different beliefs, this is not an easy task. So far the Church and the Pontiff, in order to maintain the hardfought peace between the Regions, have gone about this covertly. Yet it is no secret that the current Pontiff is eager to be the one to spread the faith to other Regions. It is rumoured that he's even willing to risk open war to achieve this, yet so far there is little support amongst Naeron's lords for such a bold move.
Yet tensions have been rising between the Regions these past years. Will this provide the Pontiff with the opportunity he so desires? Time will tell...
