Elephants of Gaja

It is Gaja  law that we treat our totem animal better than we treat our family. The elephants of Gaja are given everything that they need, including space and choice to work in Gaja. They are invaluable to our society and treated with the utmost respect. With such a large city built for large people who are on average seven feet tall, it is an extraordinary helpful that our totem animal hauls things around. They pull everything from carriages to carts. Note however that with the one exception, it is forbidden for elephant-lahks to ride on top of elephants because of our size. We can only ride them in carriages or chariots from behind. In regards to business and industry, it is quite rare for elephant-lahks to even operate carriages or carts, just because it is so impractical. Smaller lahks who live in Gaja are more suited to this.   War is a part of life and to protect Gaja and all we have gained from our symbiotic relationship, elephants join us in battle as well. This is always questioned, whether it is right for us to bring our totem animal into military affairs, but having the largest land animals charging down our enemies is an advantage we cannot sacrifice. We must remember that the well being of Gaja similarly means the well being of all elephants, and we all need to defend it sometimes. In this case, an Elephant-lahk is permitted to ride an elephant. There are even military units of elephant-lahks and war elephants that work together. The clairvoyant connection between lahks and their totem is particularly useful in battle. These units move so efficiently on the field due to their seamless communication.

I like your commentary on the ethical conflicts around using elephants in war. I wonder, are there any other military tactics that have developed around the use of elephants in war? Either tactics that support the units of elephant-lakhs and war elephants or tactics used by others against them?

Thank you. I did go back and forth about whether they would use them or not and what the rationale would be. As of now I don't have any additional ideas regarding how battles happen. I'd probably do some research on the various nations that did use them before coming up with my own spin.

Have an imaginative day!
