Sky Jellies
If you walk through the streets of Ambergard at night, just after midnight when the lamps are turned down, look up at the sky and see a marvelous display.
The floating, iridescent jellyfish float through the air, their tentacles swaying in a kind of dance. They fill the night sky as soon as it's dark enough.
They are completely harmless. They don't sting. They love to come up to people and have their tendrils stroked or the tops patted. Sometimes they squirm as if they are ticklish if you get them just in the right spot.
During the day, they live deep within Basin Lake at the center of the city. They don't like too much harsh light and a lot of fire scares them. They feed off bacteria and algae growing beneath the lake.
It is said that these creatures are pets of one of the children of the sea god. And, they were so beautiful, she wanted to share them with mortals. So, she sought out and worked with a witch to enchant them so they could rise out of the water, float in the air, and survive.
Not many people are awake at an hour to see these remarkable creatures except for one night of the year. Amid the summer feasts and celebrations, the lights are turned down right after sunset to lure them out for the Jelly Festival. So all can appreciate them and to give thanks to the goddess for her gift. The party lasts well into the night. The vendors create special souvenirs and food for the occasion. It is encouraged, when you do go inside, to keep their lights dimmer so the jellies will not be frightened away early.
