Erisvale Standard Timepiece

"An invention that does not get near enough love and attention for its importance, in the field of mechanics, is the humble pocket watch. Though many overlook such a simple invention other than as status symbols, in truth these expensive and difficult to make time pieces are also entrusted to anyone and everyone, above but the simplest of laborers, whom works on any railyard, shipyard, sky-dock or shipping depot across almost all of Valerick. They are essential tools to the loaders, packers, stevedores, rail rats, fuelers, maintenance staff, foremen, conductors and more. These simple time pieces are carefully kept in good order by these professional spaces, each staff member so entrusted with one given carte blanche for proper repair, maintenance, and more. As well as being taught how to work the device, not just read it. How to set it if required. They are trained to check them almost religiously, regularly, basically whenever they do not have an immediate task to hand, as keeping track of time down to the minute is so vital in those industries. Without the invention of this humble device by one Mikael Erisvale nearly seventy years ago, the shipping industry that exists now across our humble world in the urban centers, at the sky-ports and sea-ports and rail-yards simply would not function as it does, and could not."

Reginald Howards, a time piece enthusiast and professor of engineering in the city of Rydan at the esteemed Institute of Invention and Industrialization.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The internal workings of this device are much like those of larger clocks, however given the size discrepancy, the true feat of engineering and innovation here is the manufacturing of such parts at such a tiny size, with no real tolerance for error. From the balance and balance spring to the gears for the gear train, to the very hands of the clock face itself, every part had to be downsized and the tolerance for error, or your margin of forgiveness for the sizes of your components, as any mechanically inclined individual will know, shrinks excessively rapidly as you try to downsize any device.

Significance

The pocket watch, and specifically the Erisvale Standard Timepiece, the gold standard now for industrial applications, altered shipping all across Valerick as it spread and as Erisvale licensed his knowledge, selling his skill as he reached old age, making coin off his own well kept and meticulous notes and schematics even as his hands and ability to manufacture them himself failed him. Keeping time so accurately, only needing to be rewound once a week (and still only drifting perhaps 30 seconds off over that time) allows the shipping industry to run as tight as it does on its deadlines. The railyards, shipyards, sky-ports and depots all across Valerick simply could not sustain such tight tolerances on scheduling without this humble tool in the hands of their staff, and their immaculate training to rely on it, to take every spare moment they could catch their breath in the hard work to also check the time, to check their manifests to be hypervigiliant of schedule. The ES Timepiece line, these simple workhorses undecorated, but beautiful in their smooth and accurate operation, are the backbone of this entire structure.
Item type
Trade/Manufactured good
Rarity
There are a great deal of designs some rarer than others, however the innovative piece is the Erisvale double roller and lever system, which the minute parts are manufactured of quality steel within the simple brass casing, the backdrop on the face a white or cream color, with the numbers a deep black, as well as the hands. These are not rare pieces but expensive and valued, as they must be built by hand, and are the backbone of the shipping industry worldwide. Lesser technologies exist, however they do not achieve the necessary level of consistent accuracy, and these sorts though more decorative, are generally less valued, and therefore less rare to find on the open market.
Weight
Again this can vary quite widely.
Dimensions
They come in all shapes and sizes, however those outer measurements are not important at all. The way they are measured, using the Erisvale standard, is by the size of the movement, that is the watch's movement below the dial.
Base Price
varies from 1 gold sun to 15 gold suns.
