River of Glass

"It's out there, I seen it, I even took a piece of it. Tis as the ancient maps suggest. A river of obsidian, a 'River of Glass'. But I'm the only one o' me party who made it back. It be beyond dangerous, the range itself a twisting labyrinth, nae map exists ta help ye. This is ta say nothin' o' t'e damned greenskins, joten or foul bestials, nor o' t'e other beasties that hunt them peaks. It'd take an army ta settle and tame t'e region enough ta settle though, nae a doubt."
Thorim Grungrym, dwarven ranger

Deep within the Battered Skull Range, in the southwestern regions of the range, there lies a volcanic shelf, a highland of volcanic rock. This region of volcanic rock, sheer and craggy, with all manner of steam vents and dangers, has a true wonder of nature flowing through it, starting at the volcano and flowing east and north. A river, water that constantly seems to be in a state of boiling and cooling as it flows away, with a layer of blackish-green 'glass' atop it. In truth, that is obsidian, formed by the rapid cooling as the thin streams of magma, which flow rapidly from small pockets all about the highland. The stone itself in the region is very warm to the touch, so much so that ice and snow do not form here, and it is always warm. The river flows forth from the highlands, but eventually disappears underground, with no real knowledge about where it goes or what is below.

The river gets its name from the look of the obsidian as it forms upon the surface. Unlike how one would expect, the magma entering this river does not form other rocks. By some strange reaction of nature and perhaps magickal forces, it all becomes layers of pure obsidian, like ice floes atop the river's surface.
