An old musher explaining to his son why the Santhuli Wuulfhund is such a prized animal, and why they make excellent lead dogs.
The Santhuli Wuulfhund is a unique breed of sled-dog, specially bred in fact. Bred for speed and size like most wolfdogs, along with for toughness, health and agility. However they are unique even when compared to wolfdogs due to an interesting genetic quirk. They can communicate telepathically. They, like a few other animals on Valerick, are what is known as 'Fae-touched'. They can link with an individual, and are able to communicate in a rudimentary fashion through telepathy with that individual. In the case of the Wuulfhund, they can also communicate with the other sled-dogs in their team this way, so long as the team has spent some time together, they seem capable of forming a sort of empathic connection with a team over time. This is a most useful trait, as one may assume, for it allows much quieter travel through dangerous regions such as mountain ranges, where instability may raise an avalanche concern, or through lands where noise may draw large predators or territorial beasts, or other unpleasant monstrosities. They are a favored companion and lead dog of the Suranthi Army for their scouts, many of whom are dogsledders, as well as a prized breed for hunting and tracking all across the continent of Durol.
I feel like I read somewhere that sled dog teams, especially those that travel together for a while, develop strong, familial bonds. I think that would be even more true for this species. It makes me imagine a completely different version of Iron Will, where everyone has teams of Santhuli Wuulfhund.
