Hinterland Shields
Patrolling the banks of the Hinterland River are an infantry group known as the Hinterland Shields. Although originally a professional regiment, it has since been depleted due the Crimson Decree and now stands as a ragtag group of border guarding militia. While the army of Duke Edward Mallory is officially responsible for guarding the borders of his duchy, the river serves as an extra dangerous threshold for civilization. Both Harrowsgate and Dagford reside the western bank of the river, while to the east is wilderness filled with monsters of all types.
The Hinterland Shields, or more commonly just referred to as the Shields, can be easily identified by their tawny cloaks and bucklers emblazoned with falcons, along with their winged helms. They vary in terms of skill set, but most are little more than guards who aspired to patrol more than just battlements. Some are rangers of the wilderness, experts in tracking and hunting, but inexperienced in the ways of war against other humanoids. Still others have taken vows to guard their homelands with all their might, and have been since blessed by the divine to do so.
Composition
Tactics
As guardians over a vast river border, there is not truly a common tactic held by all of the Hinterland Shields. However, they do prefer long ranged attacks while the invader is on the other side of the river, preferring to hide amongst foliage if at all possible. When the intruder crosses the river, the shields are resolute and tenacious, refusing to give an ince of civilized land over to the enemy.
Logistics
Recruitment
The lord of Harrowsgate is primarily in charge of recruitment when it comes to filling the ranks of the Hinterland Shields, and although it may not seem like it, there are requirements to join. This includes citizenship of the Crescent region, the ability to pass a physical skill challenge, and expertise in at least one type of weapon. The recruit is then placed into a six week long training regiment before being sent out beyond the city, and subsequently required to check in at least once every fortnight.
I like the details on how the Crimson Decree affected the shift in what this regiment looked like. You can feel the effects through the whole article. Nice work tying your responses together.
