Rivenese Whetstone
The distinction between an ordinary whetstone and a rivenese whetstone is small and to the untrained eye, indistinguishable. A small series of etches, like tallies, mark the underside. However, once identified as a rivenese whetstone, the symbol indicates the owner is part of secret martial society within the Southern Marches, known as the Order of the Blade. The order has reach throughout Tusnya, with its secret headquarters stationed in Riven. Compromised of the finest warriors, they serve as a neutral military force when conflict arises between cities and towns within the Southern Marches. Because most of the time the cities are at peace and united, the Order of the Blade operates as a secret council, guiding those in command towards peaceful resolutions.
As whetstones are typically not shown to one another in the course of a normal conversation, one of the few ways to identify another member of the order is to catch them sharpening their weapon. The rivenese whetstones are used to locate other members of their society as they don't normally convene together in large groups. Therefore, even the most tenured of members could not be aware of certain members. Being identified as a member of the Order of the Blade supersedes any political affiliation, race, or religion so typically when two members meet, it is a joyous occasion at first. Soon, however, it devolves into the discussion over the troubling issue as to why the rivenese whetstone was used in the first place. This could be due to assassination rumors, political machinations of certain leaders, or even an uprising coming from a nearby territory.
To earn a rivenese whetstone requires entry into the Order of the Blade to start, but also to earn the respect of their leaders. It is a treasure worth more than gold as it can secure safety, lodging, and allies even in places when there appear to be none. It is used as a beacon to other members, alerting them even in foreign towns. Because of its utility, it is given to the more tenured members of the order, having proven oneself to be honest and true, regardless of heritage.
