Inverse Plane

A plane of twisted cities and will-breaking oddities, the Mirror Plane is a place of tyranny and oppression. As one of the Reflection Planesthat make up the metaphysical essence of the Material Plane, the Mirror overlaps with the Material wherever there is oppression and power, and is shaped by them.   Most scholars agree that the Mirror Plane is, in many ways, a reflection of the combined tyranny and discipline of the Material Plane. This explains the strange, twisted nature of the things that inhabit the plane, as well as the existence of the twisted plateau known as Leng.

Navigation

Mostly comprised of sprawling cities, trade routes, and well-constructed roads, navigation within the Mirror Plane is quite similar navigation in the Material Plane. There are some notable differences, particularly the strangeness of the stars, but those who know the landmarks can navigate with little problem.   Much more difficult than navigation itself is the oppressive atmosphere that suffuses the plane. Travelers will find their will being sapped by the very air even as the numerous interplanar slavers lurk in the surprisingly deep shadows.

Notable Locations

Awyrgdan, home of the Weargs (Ungeárian Fae)

Deep within the heart of the Mirror Plane lies the ominous court known as Awyrgdan, the Court of Autumn. It is found by walking Darkward of the Material Plane or, more commonly, by getting lost on the Darkward edges of the Material Plane. Also known as the Court of Endings or Court of Autumn, Awyrgdan is the court of all manner of dark and malicious fey. Bogey Mans, Boggarts, and other horrible creatures stalk these dark lands.   Mortals who manage to survive the Mirror Plane's dangers long enough to make it to Awyrgdan will find a surprising respite from the other dangers of the plane. In order to keep relative peace with mortal society, the Autumn King keeps strict laws regarding how the fey can treat visiting mortals, preventing wanton murder or imprisonment. Awyrgdan is by no means safe for mortals, however. The local fey will take any opportunity to trick a visiting mortal into a terrible bargain in the hopes that the mortal will unwittingly break it. And you do not lightly break a faerie bargain.

Border Lands

Material - The Dreamlands

As with the other Reflection Planes, the Inverse Plane overlaps heavily with the Material. Unlike the others, the Inverse reflects, in many ways, a twisted reflection of the Material. Cities and other settlements reflect as empty lands, baren or showing little sign of plant life. Empty lands in the Material reflect as sprawling cities with twisted buildings of strange and unnatural shapes.   Some scholars believe that the Inverse represents mortal nightmares the way the Aether represents mortal dreams.

Shadow - The Cult

Where Inverse meets Shadow lies a dark society of strange creatures known as The Cult. Nobody knows what exactly it is that they serve, if anything. In fact, interrogation of its members shows that even they know not the entity their cult serves, if it serves anything at all. Some scholars believe that the Cult has never served anything, instead using vague rituals and promises to gather power and manipulate others into obeisance.

Aether - The Nightmare Rain

Where the Aether and Inverse Planes meet lies an enormous city. Reminescent in many ways of large mortal cities, the city is permanently beset by torrential, windless rain devoid of thunder and lightning. This rain is thought to be a sort of metaphysical runnoff from the Sea of Dreams, and carries with it the energy of all the nightmares of all the creatures who dream.   Creatures in the Nightmare Rain quickly go mad as the nightmares coalesce within their mind. Sometimes, the rain forms into actual creatures of nightmare. Amalgamations of fragments of numerous nightmares grown together.

Water - The Vanishing Depths

Where Water and Inverse meet lies a vast ocean of silent waves. The water in this sea is unmoving, not even yielding to the weight of steps. It comes with a catch, however. When not observed, the sea undulates as if amidst a great storm. These sudden movements only happen when nobody is watching. It is not uncommon for travelers to be suddenly taken from behind by a great wave, or for a great swell to take the seemingly-solid water out from under the traveler's feet. Once submerged, the traveler has two choices: shut the eyes and let the current take you where it will, or open your eyes and freeze yourself solid within the silence of the wave.   They say the deepest parts of the Vanishing Depths are inhabited by those who once drowned within its waves.

Fire - The Flameforge

The borders fo Fire and Inverse are a strange place, filled with vast structures of seemingly random design, covered in luminous flames. These flames pull in nearby ashes and add them to the structures they burn, constantly constructing new shapes across the landscape.   Some scholars believe that the flames do not construct anything, but simply burn backwards in time.

Magma - The Firemaw

Where Magma and Inverse collide lies a land of bubbling rivers of magma surrounding rings of enormous volcanos. The magma does not flow from these volcanos, but flows into them, even flowing up hill to do so. Perodically - though no scholar has been able to catalogue the exact pattern, if there is one - one or more volcano will "derupt". A process by which the volcano pulls magma, stone, ash, and hapless explorers into its cauldera, or even deep beneath the surface.
