The Boiling Wastes
Vast stretches of sandy dunes that eventually disappear beneath the northern horizon. This blistering desert surrounds the home of the Ondali people, called Sjothangur in their native tongue, is fraught with unbearable temperatures and sands that roil and bubble of their own accord.
Most maps list Sjothangur as belonging to the Ondali people, but the true lords of the Boiling Wastes are the Gleypworm Bandits. The Ondali claim that the bandits are a rogue tribe and have attempted to annex multiple times to no avail. Over time, this has led to numerous civil wars between the two peoples, and a culture of frequent raids on both sides of the desert. These raids pose a serious danger to merchant caravans traveling into the desert.
Localized Phenomena
The seemingly placid sands of Sjothangur hide the dangerous phenomenon that gives the region its name. Huge bubbles of superheated air from deep beneath the sands get trapped beneath the surface to form deadly traps for the unwary traveler.
These death bubbles make their way fairly quickly to the surface in deafening blasts of hot air and sand at frequent, irregular intervals.
Death bubbles that get stuck on their trip toward the surface are particularly dangerous, usually growing to great size. When an unwary traveler steps on the layer of sand above the bubble it collapses under their weight, sending them falling into a crater full of pressurized, superheated air.
Fauna & Flora
Some stubborn creatures manage to survive Sjothangur, thriving on the heat that radiates from beneath the desert. This makes the deeper regions of the desert surprisingly rich with wildlife. From the excruciating leaf-barbs of the Sarsukey plant, to the carnivorous Gleypworms, to the deceptively passive Spreng Bush, every life form within Sjothangur is a force to be reckoned with.
