Jomskarls
The order of the Jomskarls, Iola's premier mercenary company of dutiful and steadfast warriors residing in their great fortress of Jomsgard.
Structure
Leading the Jomskarls is an elected Visur who presides over the Jomskarl's council of eight which is a special council made up of the most senior and veteran Jomskarls. The Visur is told to uphold the creed of the order which forbids them from taking wives but not from having children, they must honor contracts to the death and never give up the secrets of the order to outsiders.
Culture
The customs of the Jomskarls are mostly shrouded in a fog of mystery as one known rule is that the Jomskarls are notoriously tight-lipped about the inner workings of their order to outsiders. What is known about the Jomskarls is that the order is composed of diligent and honorable warriors from vast distances of the world. Many warriors hail from Iola but many can be found to be from Herodia, the lands of the Prus, and from places even further away. All inside Jomsgard know of the creed of the warriors and they are honor-bound to obey their tenents as failure to do so typically results in exile or execution.
Public Agenda
The Jomskarls serve as a trusty mercenary band filled to the brim with well equipped and well trained warriors ready to fight at a minutes notice. Many are 3rd, 4th or 5th sons looking to make a name for themselves in the annals of Iolan life as great warriors and rich men. The Jomskarls are known to end battles simply by being recruited by one side as they truly are the greatest warriors of Iola and are not known for surrendering.
Assets
The great fortress of Jomsgard is a sight to behold as it sits at the edge of a cliffside and the only two entrances are the main road to the gate, called the Red Road for the rivers of blood that one would have to shed to take the fortress from it. The other entrance is the small harbor at the bottom of the cliff that is only accessible via an elaborate pulley system.
History
Founded by the brothers Hosta and Haunsa in the aftermath of battle, the Jomskarls have slowly gained a reputation for ruthless success as a mercenary company of some of the best fighters Iola has to offer. Beginning as a raiding company, the Karls became wealthier and wealthier to the point where they were able to buy the best equipment and take the time to slowly become the greatest and trained mercenaries money can buy. Around the early 200's A.E, the company made a name for itself with a string of mythical stories of Jomskarl warriors winning duels and dying noble deaths which further increased the awe the order commanded. By the modern-day, the order is enjoying the presumed height of its fame and successes as the walls of Jomsgard remain the host for some of the most skilled warriors in the world whose fame is known to much of the wider world.
