In the beginning, all that existed were the Old Gods. They were a race of supremely powerful beings, not omniscient or all-powerful, but almost. There were many, and they lived peacefully. As time passed, they grew bored of just each other. There were many, yet they were lonely.
Together, the conspired to create something bigger than themselves. They created the universe, through all their powers combined. Each took on an aspect of this new creation: light, darkness, chaos, life. On one world, small, circling a medium-sized star, humanity evolved.
In order to help these short-lived creatures, some of the Old Gods came down to the planet called Earth on occasion. The interaction between humanity and the gods gave rise to a world-wide religion.
A few millennia ago, intruders from a different dimension invaded. This sparked the rise of a new religion, and an all-out war between the powerful races.
This story takes place in the middle of the war. The Old Gods have faded into obscurity, most worshipping the New Gods. Humanity has no idea this war is raging, but some devious Gods have an idea to use humanity for their own designs.
