Muriel Proulx
Writer, journalist, and former member of the Steel Wardens
Lady Muriel Proulx
Introduction
"Book aren't just a collection of words, you see. They can take you to another world, just as they can teach our about our world. And they can set you free from you prisons. That is just like what magic can do for you as well."
Admired writer and former member of the Steel Wardens, Muriel Proulx was one of the 5 survivors of the Battle of the Red Diamond. With no more battles to be fought, she found herself a new purpose through her books and the teaching of magic, owing most of her fame to the success of her "An Introduction to Magic" series.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
There is nothing noteworthy about Muriel's appearance. She has a medium-long black hair, average body shape, and not very fit for exercise anymore. Her eyes are also not what they used to be, needing to wear glasses when she is writing or reading. Her skin is also a bit fairer than most people, as she doesn't go out often.
Specialized Equipment
There are no weapons that Muriel is skilled with, as she has never been a very physical-oriented person. When she was in the Wardens, she trained her body enough to keep her in shape but was never able to get any good with weapons.Mental characteristics
Personal history
Muriel was born in a rather strict family from Vilennor. She was properly educated from her first few years and later went to an upper-class school until adulthood. Back then, all she cared about was studying to meet her parents' expectations. Her life was dull, leaving all social aspects to the corner.
But as she approached her late teens, she began to grow more and more rebellious. Muriel was tired of living to appease her parents, and after a fight with them, she ended up running away from home. With nowhere to go and her will to turn her life 180º, she headed to Edgemourn to meet the Steel Wardens.
It was an awkward moment when she met her heroes during the visit due to her lack of social skills, but one of the members of the Council saw something in her, and invited her to join their ranks. Thrilled by the opportunity to study magic and join the legendary Wardens, she accepted.
She spent most of her time isolated in her studies, even though the Wardens were always trying to get her to interact more. Still, her focus on reading and practicing weren't for nothing, as she quickly became the most skilled wizard in their ranks, eventually joining the Council years later.
During the Battle of the Red Diamond, Muriel played a big part in keeping the enemy lines as far as she could, along with other mages who could operate the traps of the fort. She held on until the last moment, but due to exhaustion, she couldn't join her friends in the last stand. Still, she did what she could from above the walls, despite Achard's insistence that she wasn't able to fight.
When the war was over, the remaining Warden's morale fell drastically. Muriel wasn't sure of what she could do, now that the only thing that she did during her life was over - the Wardens didn't have any use anymore. When the group was disbanded by the King, Achard left Archana, but not before entrusting a favor to Muriel: to do what she did best, but this time directly to the people.
After some time pondering, Muriel realized that, while magic was her thing, she didn't need to work using magic. The ADP was centralizing the study of magic, and Archana could use a more popular, widespread tool to learn the art. She then decided that her goal now was to teach through the books that she would write, explaining everything she knows about magic.

The secret plan
Achard shared with Muriel the secrets of the King's deal with Artalgne, in which Archana would provide the ADP's results to the Empire in exchange for peace. Muriel, as Achard, saw this a treason and started to doubt the recent decisions of the ruler. Along with the books, Muriel took the chance to start a small newspaper, the Guardian's Report, in which she would anonymously criticize the government.Education
Muriel went through the entire formal education system and in a highly esteemed school at that. She learned all she had to, but while most of it ended up as useless knowledge to her, at least these years served to exercise her wits and help her get closer to her full potential.Accomplishments
To the public, Muriel's greatest achievement was surviving the Battle of the Red Diamond, though she can hardly agree with that. To her, her best deeds were her books' success, becoming a member of the Warden's Council, and having the courage to run away from home.Mental Trauma
Muriel's greatest regret was being unable to help more than she did during the Red Diamond or having survived when most of her friends perished. While she tries to distract her mind from it, the events of this battle follow her to this day, 15 years later.Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Independence. Muriel wants people to be independent, strong, free to follow their own paths. To her, magic is what allowed her to reach this end, and that is why she wants to spread this gift and its beauty. She is also very opposed to the idea of the ADP, centralizing the teaching of magic, and so she wants to act against it through her books.
Social
Contacts & Relations
There are but a few people that Muriel maintains contact with. Her work partners are some of them, such as her publisher, advisors, and those involved in her secret project (see the spoiler). She is also the only person Achard keeps contact with, through the letters they exchange.Family Ties
Due to their rough history, Muriel has barely kept any contact with her family. They contact her every once in a while, but she still keeps her distance as much as she can.Social Aptitude
Despite being able to write books very well, Muriel's worst weakness is certainly her social skills. She was never that good with interactions, even when she was part of the Council. She sticks closer to those who understand her with few words, so they can "translate" what she wants to say to everyone else.Hobbies & Pets
She bought a small shrewleon a few years back, a friend to keep her company while she works. She calls her "Lady Cutiebite", because of her unusual habit of biting things.
