Ol' Deepsea

Legendary pirate and former captain of the Maelstrom

Captain Marin Évrard (a.k.a. Ol' Deepsea)

Introduction

"Carrying the name of our old captain isn't just an honor to him... it's a duty. The old man was the best of us Rovers, he's done a lot that makes us proud. Alwer feels the weight of his legacy, and tries to uphold his name just as if it was his own father's."
— Beatrice "Bee" Lykke, crewmember of the Maelstrom

A legendary pirate captain known as the Ol' Deepsea, Marin Évrard earned his reputation among the Rovers as an unflinching leader, skilled duelist, restless explorer, and ingenious plotter, forever to be remembered in the tales that are told of his exploits.

Personal history

As is rather common among the rovers, Marin was born aboard his parents' ship. As the son of the captains, Marin stayed with them in their ship his entire childhood and earned the nickname "Deepsea" since he was the only one among the crew who was born on the deep sea.

In his late teens, already an experienced sailor, his parents' ship entered a violent, legendary storm that was known to be eternal. It was a challenge for any Rover, and it was one that they couldn't overcome. As far as Marin knew, he was the only survivor, who woke up stranded away on a floating barrel. Luckily, he was soon found by another Rovian ship and taken to the Hub Lands.

Even though he was safe then, he was determined to go back into that storm and face it again. Sailing was all he knew, and so he felt that he just had to "avenge" his parents' death by conquering the storm. With the savings that his parents had on land, Marin ordered a new ship to be made for him, which he named the Maelstrom.

With a couple of new friends, Captain Deepsea sailed around the world, trying to find new crew members while learning all he could about the storm. This quest took him all over the continent and beyond, through adventures he couldn't have expected. He fought in the War for the Hub Lands and founded the Pirate Order, all adding to his reputation.

When he deemed him and his crew ready, he returned to face the storm. Due to his fame among the Rovers, this event earned a new dimension, with many of his peers rooting for the Maelstrom. And, in an epic battle of will, Deepsea and his crew not only successfully breached the storm but did conquer it, bringing it to an end.

Secrets unfold

Deepsea learned about the Elemental Stones during his travels, and among his studies came to the conclusion that the undying storm was the work of Fulgur, the Elemental Stone of Thunder. And just as he was theorizing, there was the stone, floating in the eye of the storm. He claimed the gem, putting an end to the storm, but keeping its existence a secret from anyone outside his crew.

Many other legendary quests followed his name through the decades, until the day he finally died at 78. But even though he passed away, his legacy continued in the hands of Alwer Deepsea, an adoptive son of sorts that he took as his apprentice, and who is now the new captain of the Maelstrom and its crew.

Education

Despite being raised on the sea, Ol' Deepsea had a vast knowledge about many subjects, as he was always reading when idle, always learning from the places he traveled to. So while he had never gone to any educational institution, he was self-taught, well-spoken, and knowledgeable.
