Kipper Wildwander

Kipper Brickelback

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Kipper is a small Forest Gnome, with suntanned skin, long messy hair, and a smile on his face.

Special abilities

Kipper is very charismatic and has the help of many spirit friends, even more than the three that continue to travel with him, even out of the Beastlands. He can call upon them at a moment's notice, and they are more than happy to help, even if for just a short time. Kipper is very careful not to tax them too hard so there are times he has to handle things on his own and not with the help of his friends (but those times are rare).   Kipper can also link his spirit with those of summoned beasts, disappearing from the physical world altogether and inhabiting the summoned animal for a short time. Kipper continues to practice this and he is getting better at doing this with different animals and for longer periods of time.   Kipper is also able to disappear and reappear somewhere else, with the help of his spirit friends.

Apparel & Accessories

Kipper likes to travel with pouches, satchels, sacks, implements, etc. that help him navigate the wilderness, collect interesting samples, and prepare food. He wears simple traveling clothes, but he has some magic items he obtained during his time in the Beastlands. As he is fond of maps, both drawing and collecting, Kipper equips himself with a cartographer's case, and all the associated equipment that goes along with it.

Specialized Equipment

Kipper has a number of items he obtained during his time in the Beastlands.   The Spirit Lantern is one of his most prized possessions, and contains and protects a spirit from harm. In turn, this spirit offers Kipper help. Their relationship is mutual and friendly. The spirit is not under Kipper's control and is not a prisoner.   His walking Staff of the Woodlands was a gift to Kipper from a mighty Treant in the Beastlands, after Kipper recovered some lost acorns from his bough. He was very appreciative and likes Kipper's spirit. The staff rarely leaves Kipper's side.   His mismatched boots of Speed and Springing have helped Kipper out of some awkward places, particularly ones that Flitwick and Padfoot have put him in.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Kipper Wildwander used to be known as Kipper Brickelback, before being lost in the Beastlands at the age of 10. He spent over 40 years in the Beastlands, growing in age and power, while less than a year was lost on the prime. Kipper was befriended by a hummingbird named Flitwick early on in his time in the Beastlands, and they became fast friends. Flitwick and Kipper went on adventures, met some strange beasts, and even a few lost people like himself, but Kipper was very careful not to get too close. A particular incident with Black-tongued Simon helped to keep Kipper at arm's length of visitors for a while.   Over a decade into his time in the Beastlands, Kipper befriended a fox named Padfoot, who took Kipper on some very fun excursions through the Beastlands before they finally settled in Nettledown burrow. Padfoot, Flitwick, and Kipper became the best of friends, and the two spirit beasts introduced Kipper to a wide world of fascinating creatures, places, and sights.   Less than five years ago, Beastlands times, Kipper and his friends came across a lost and scared bear cub. After trying to find his mother, but to no avail, they took him in and raised him in Nettledown Burrow, eventually naming him Bert. The bear cub is quite a handful but his loyalty to his friends, and especially Kipper is extremely high. Bert often rushes headlong, without thinking of the consequences, and has been known to get his friends into trouble on occasion. However, he feels bad and does his best to help solve the problem (though not always successfully).   Through Kipper's time in the Beastlands, he became very well liked by many of the spirits, and he came to think of them as his extended family. One year ago Kipper managed to find his way out of the Beastlands and ended up back in Hollow's Point, with Flitwick, Padfoot, and Bert at his side. It has been a tough year getting acclimated to his new environment, reuniting with his parents Brace and Nyx Brickelback, and his aunt Jenethen Bristlebottom, who runs the city of Hollow's Point at this point in time.

Education

No formal education, aside from his short ten years in Hollow's Point. In the Beastlands Kipper learned the ways of the spirit world, and was very skillful in persuading his friends to help him when needed. They taught him the ways of nature and survival, and he has a keen knack for knowing helpful plants and animals.

Failures & Embarrassments

Kipper's biggest failure was trying to help Black-tongued Simon when he first entered the Beastlands. Kipper was naïve and thought people were generally good. Simon took advantage of Kipper's goodwill, stole some precious seeds and plants, and caused some damage before he left out of the Beastlands. Kipper was very slow to trust people for a long time after that.

Mental Trauma

While Kipper was lucky to have found his friends in the Beastlands, the first few years away from his family and his home were very hard on him. His encounter with Simon did not help matters much. Kipper has abandonment issues and likes to be surrounded by friends as often as he can. He does not like to be left alone too often or for too long.

Intellectual Characteristics

Kipper is a bit slow to pick up on nuances right away, but he is not dull in any way. He grasps concepts well and is good at solving puzzles that are natural in nature. Math is not his strong suit.

Morality & Philosophy

Deep down Kipper thinks that everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves and their intentions. He gives people the benefit of the doubt, but he is no longer simply trusting of people without thought. He believes the actions of people transcend the physical world and will permeate into the spirit world.   Animals and nature are wonders to behold, and no matter how much time you spend studying them you will never be able to fully understand them. Work with them to unlock as many of their secrets as possible.

Taboos

Kipper is a vegetarian. He has known too many animals that ended up as spirits in the Beastlands to feel comfortable eating any of them. He is not militant about it, and will not chastise though who enjoy their ranking in the food chain. However, wasteful killing of animals is definitely frowned upon.   To kill an animal without first trying to ascertain its intent is wrong and should be avoided.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Kipper is looking to discover how to travel into and out of the Beastlands and the Prime Plane at will. He is very familiar with the Beastlands already, and his goal is to become equally familiar with the Prime Plane. He is intent on traveling, meeting people, encountering different weather, animals, cultures, and geography. Eventually he will be able to traverse between the world he was born into and his adopted world at will.

Virtues & Personality perks

Kipper is very positive-minded and likes to see the good in people first. He is gregarious when needed. He does not look down on people that do no harm to others. He looks to help others improve where they can, but he is not pushy about it. Live and let live.

Vices & Personality flaws

Kipper enjoys puffball spirit mushrooms (you can eat them, sniff them, smoke them, drink them; very versatile). While they do not affect him overly much anymore, they can be quite strong for those in the Prime Plane that have not adapted to various effects of the mushroom.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Kipper's relationship with his parents Brace and Nyx Brickelback is understandably strained. They lost their young son, and were presented with a much older Gnome, that they do not know. He has been optimistic about eventually reforging his relationship with them. Currently his aunt Jenethen Bristlebottom is adjusting the best to his situation and is very understanding of his plight. She is looking for ways to introduce him to people and give him an opportunity to explore the world.

Social Aptitude

Kipper is very charismatic, and even more so with animals and spirits. He is warm, open, and genuine in his demeanour. His lack of understanding of social nuance can sometimes put him in awkward situations but his good nature often help him navigate through them without much harm.   He will often speak to his animal and spirit friends, forgetting that all of them are visible to the common person. Sometimes this can create awkward situations for him, but most people just accept he is a quirky fellow.

Mannerisms

A particular habit of Kipper's is to extend his hand out for someone to sniff. His time with animals have drilled in that specific gesture. When he is paying attention he knows to just shake hands, or whatever the appropriate greeting is. If he is distracted he may fall into that habit without thinking.

Hobbies & Pets

Not really pets, but his favoured animal spirit companions include Flitwick the hummingbird, Padfoot the fox, and Bert the bear cub. These three stick with Kipper always and everywhere. The other spirits he interacts with do not typically become visible to others unless necessary.

Speech

Depending on the type of person he is dealing with Kipper's voice may change to reflect the type of animal he associates with that person. For example, a large or hairy person might have Kipper speaking deeper and growling more, while a thin and wiry person might have Kipper speak in a higher pitch. His aunt is trying to get him to moderate a consistent tone as much as possible, but habits are hard to break.

Wealth & Financial state

Kipper has no money and is not interested in the obtaining of it. He considers experience and knowledge the greatest treasure. He likes interesting items though, particularly naturally forming rocks, gems, wood.
