The Manticore's Tail

The Manticore’s Tail is an underground society, originating on Elomawan, that is of a True Neutral alignment and tends to be highly ambiguous and mysterious. Similar in functioning to a thieves’ guild, black market brotherhood, or assassin’s guild, the Tail is one of the largest politically-independent organizations on Aerune. Its officers are kept anonymous to the public and to nearly all of the active membership, preferring to guide via distant message and cryptic clues than by direct assistance. The overall society does not broadcast its aims or goals, but it is largely untrusted by most.
Membership is offered to individuals who are noticed by the Tail’s officers to be some flavor of useful, and - uniquely to similar societies - acceptance is assumed. Any new members who decline their participation must seek out an officer to refuse in person. New members who do not actively decline are soon given an assignment, a contract, or a task to complete; doing so successfully earns them a place as an active member. Failing to do so does not automatically disqualify a new member, but three failures will evict them. Deliberately going against the Tail’s aims in an assignment will mark a new member as an individual in poor standing; going too far down this road will mark them as a person to be eliminated.
