Whatever drove such a clearly competent and corpulent man to the stinking marshes of Moshabar is one of the greater unanswered questions of shadowright. Of course, many luxurious goods and exquisite foods pass through the smugglers port, but certainly, there are more *comfortable* places for such a wealthy and shrewd merchant to be? Bertio to some extend fuels this uncertainty about his origins, his overabundant sha'gean dress conflicts with his far too pale skin to hail from the desert area and this discrepancy is almost certainly another layer in silken armor that shrouds and confuses his opponents. After his arrival in Shadowright Bertio was already very wealthy and he expertly leveraged his business acumen and fortune to corner the sheltered docks nearly completely. Two years after his arrival his control over the financial happenings was nearly complete and a year after that people started calling him "the harbourmaster"
Morality & Philosophy
Hospitable to a fault, a characteristic he seems to value above all else of his adopted sha'gean culture, Bertio is an excellent host. He takes this so seriously that many have considered his house neutral ground. Of course, this too is something that suits the shrewd politician. No matter who quarrels, they do sit, eat and speak at his table.
