Draug
A draug is a type of undead, invented by Hela.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Draugr resemble whatever race they were made from, usually Helvaettir or Humans. The magic required to reanimate a draug is fragile, and as such, there are typically many redundancies and fail-safes to prevent the spellwork from failing if some of the symbols are damaged. Usually, the magical arrays are cut, tattooed, branded, or otherwise applied to the draug's skin. However, some more skilled mages will opt to put most or all of the arrays inside the body, either to make them harder to target in combat, or simply for their aesthetic preference. In some cases, there will even also be decoy arrays on the skin.
Genetics and Reproduction
Draugr cannot reproduce.
Ecology and Habitats
Being undead, draugr aren't as affected by their environment as the living, and can "live" almost anywhere.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Draugr are hematophagous.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
The vast majority of draugr are in Hel.
Average Intelligence
Draugr are as intelligent as they were in life, but retain none of their former memories.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Draugr have the same senses they had in life.
Civilization and Culture
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
In Hel, most draugr are created by the Principality of Hel's government from the corpses of executed prisoners. These are typically put to work as laborers or guards, or are sold to Helean citizens. It is not illegal for a citizen to make a draug themselves, but obviously, most methods of obtaining corpses are. However, if someone gives their consent to be reanimated when they die, it can be legally done. Additionally, Heleans are entitled to the corpse of anyone they kill in self-defense or a duel, as well as the corpses of any enemy soldiers they kill in wartime. In the latter case, disputes over the ownership of a corpse are expected to be resolved without the involvement of any kind of arbiter.
Most Aevoreans that know of draugr fear them, although a few pity them instead. Most Irkallans outside of Hel are indifferent to them.
