Souls
A soul is the very essence of someone's being. Every living creature has a soul. A creature can technically live, as in have a functional body, without a soul but will lack any consciousness or ability to act.
It is possible to remove a soul from a body, entirely intact. This is sometimes done, in conjunction with an anchoring spell, to travel to Somnium while awake.
A soul can be split in two ways: The natural split that occurs when dreaming (i.e. going to Somnium), and artificially splitting a soul. In the first case, the pieces of the soul remain connected, and become whole again when leaving Somnium. This process is perfectly safe. The second case, on the other hand, must be done intentionally through magic. This process is incredibly painful and is irreversible. Cutting a soul like this can cause changes in a person's personality and loss of memories. In extreme cases, it can also cause their body to malfunction in various ways. Small amounts of damage to a soul can be healed over time, but significant damage is permanent. When a person dies their soul is destroyed and cannot be recovered. The only way to prevent this is to place the soul in a Soul Jar or Phylactery.
Souls and soul fragments can be used for a variety of purposes:
- Soul fragments can be used to bind an object to a person, by attaching the fragment to the object and using an anchoring spell. A person always knows the location of objects bound to them and can summon said objects to themselves as long as they aren't more than fifty feet away. A modification of this process can be used to make an object that will track a person's movements regardless of where they are, typically using maps or compasses.
- Souls and soul fragments can be used to greatly bolster the power of spells. This will damage the soul with each use, and it will eventually be destroyed.
- The soul can also be bound to an object, making that object contain the person's consciousness instead of their original body. This is quite dangerous, mostly because of the risk of rejection. If the soul is rejected, it can be damaged, potentially resulting in the same effects as those of splitting a soul too much.
