Alyu

The god of Knowledge and Awareness, the Seer of the Stars, and the Archivist, Alyu is one of the three most well-known gods along with Asune and Sorres. Also known as Uphine or Wano, she has traditionally played a minor and inconsequential role in mythos, before coming to prominence as a god in Her own right as a result of the teachings of the Church of the Celestial Triad and Her general support towards scientific discovery and knowledge. Though she is commonly considered female, certain matriarchal sects have depicted Alyu as a male, representing their secondary place in the pantheon.   In traditional Oenian dogma Alyu was depicted as being far below Oen and Sorres (who, though far less powerful than Oen, served as his antithesis). In the creation myth of The Shaping, Oen gave his Firstborn a perfect memory so as to recall and appreciate all that He had designed for their sake; after Sorres's sundering this memory was rendered flawed, which is why people forget things. Alyu was the last embodiment of this perfect memory, having remained uncorrupted because they had remained with Oen during the fracture of the Firstborn. As a result Oen granted her the role of archivist; their main duty was serving as Alyu's "scribe" and preserving the truth of His design for all mortals to bear witness to.   Modern Selesti dogma, however, has Alyu playing a much more significant role on par with Oen and Sorres. First (and perhaps the most controversial) was the idea that Alyu existed before Oen, if but a tiniest fraction of a moment before; the God of Knowledge could not claim to know all and observe all if they had not existed since the true beginning. Furthermore, instead of being a product of Oen's design Alyu granted her own gift to the Firstborn, just as Sorres had: the gift of sentience and awareness. It is this awareness that makes them more than simple playthings and toys under Oen's control, and why could not simply erase Sorres's sundering and start anew - the sentient Firstborn, not wanting to "die an instant after their birth", refused and willed themselves to continue existing in their current form. Thus while she makes the fewest claims of power on the known world of Aeyvis and beyond, Alyu still keeps Oen's power in check by giving similar power to their birthed mortals.   While Alyu dogma does not claim to have created any part of reality, it is said that her Halls of Revelation keep perfect records of everything within her jurisdiction and observation -- including Oen's reality, Sorres's interpretations, and the lives and imaginations of every single sentient mortal that has ever existed (and perhaps, every one that will ever exist). Another emerging Selesti belief is the idea that instead of physically maintaining permanence in some sort of afterlife, the souls of the deceased are written into one of her records and stored forevermore. While these records are not exactly "alive" in their own right, the very nature of their existence causes particularly sentimental individuals to cause "echoes" within the Ethereal Plane causing ghosts to emerge; additionally, it is speculated that when a revive spell or similar is cast, it is actually calling upon that person's record and willing them back into existence. Modern theological scholars say this view is supported by the behavior of the dead and once-dead -- neither can claim any awareness of the afterlife when being spoken to, for example.   While the nations of the continent of Toraya typically scorn traditional worship in favor of self-determination and individual enlightenment (partially due to their cultural roots in shamanism and the sorcery-backed caste system popular in many of those nations), the existence of the The Endless Wheel Library and the desire of many Torayan nations to keep up with the Izeran progressives in the race for knowledge and understanding has promoted the individual worship of Alyu -- not so much as an absolute authority of divine nature than as a motherly figure and teacher, to guide them to a path of betterment and true insight.   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   God of Truth, Knowledge, Memory, Judgment / Impartiality, and Time (merely as a passing observer, not claiming dominion over it.)   It has been said that before there was will, there was knowledge. For one must know before one wants for, strives for based on that knowledge. And thus Alyu exists outside of Oen's reign, he cannot affect her but in turn she may change nothing, acting merely as an observer as reality stretches itself to meet his will. She holds no sway over dreams either, as those are shepherded by Sorres through his reflections. But she sees all -- all that is, all that has been, all that will be.   It is said that she reigns over the stars, a hundred thousand distant eyes that watch over the world that Oen reigns over.
