Cartographer's Guild

Far more active and far-reaching than the slow and clunky Gerceni Union (the "official" alliance of the scholars of most civilized nations), the Cartographer's Guild does much more than mapmaking and sketching. Indeed, they claim to map the stars themselves, the very planes -- and since the stars are attributed to Alyu, the God of Knowledge, it's apparent that it is a cheeky reference to mapping "all of knowledge, everywhere". A decent amount of them are indeed locked away in their studies back in the old world, experimenting with magic that furthers the desires of the Gerceni Union (and sometimes, beyond their needs and even their laws).
That being said, there is a decent amount of scholars that actually do go out into the world and study populations, magical and natural phenomena, and yes -- make maps of lesser known areas to the civilized world. In recent years they've made an effort to expand to newer regions, now that the old world has gotten, in their words, "quite and utterly boring".
The conservatives have humble hopes to map places such as Solace and the Siwa Isles ; some of the more "experimental" folks have their eyes set on the heights of the Empyrean or the depths of the Pelagic.
