The Scintillate

Overview

An excerpt from the journal of Professor Riavalescu, of the Sehlen branch of the Cartographer's Guild   The so-called "fairy's pocket" is the second most interacted with plane out of the secondary planes, after the Igneous. This is because, much like its fiery relative, the dimensional plane is ripe with life: forests teeming with life, looming mountains, and wide valleys with breathtaking views.   It was the easiest to travel around, as its landscape is the most familiar -- simply stepping on solid ground and walking instead of hoping you won't sink, or float away, or burst into flames. Furthermore, the existence of actual plants and rivers lightens the burden of preparing expedition supplies and feeding the crew. Indeed, many a scholar has joked that an "expedition to the Feywild" is secretly a vacation in disguise, because of the utter pleasantness of the area.   So why, then, is it second to a literally fiery hellscape in terms of interaction? Because as nice as the land itself it, interaction implies interacting with the native inhabitants there -- and that experience is a pleasantry at best and a sick joke at worst.   The fey are simultaneously fascinating and terrifying due to the fact that they are completely and utterly unpredictable. While they have yet to be seen lying (or, alternatively, this is a testament to their skill at hiding it), it takes an average of about two minutes for any person new to the plane to get frustrated with dealing with one. They speak in riddles and tricks, finding amusement in the nonsensical world of their all-too-real imaginations. As one scholar aptly put it: "They took all the crazy that was supposed to belong to the dimension and stuck it in their heads instead."   While there is not a formal agreement with the fey as there is with the homos hellens (they couldn't even agree on who would represent them as a ruling party as there is no ruling party), some of the Fey have expressed an interest in seeing the material world and/or making deals with mortals. Though no scholar has ever been reported making such an agreement through their own travels (not that it needs to be discouraged, most academics just dislike them) the existence of urban legends of dealing with "fairy people" have led some in the Cartographer's Guild to wonder if they already have a means of travelling to our plane.   On an unrelated note, many who have travelled to the so-called Feywild have observed the striking similarities in apperance of the Fey to that of the reclusive elves, whose native continent of Altones and single colony of Tol Hanye are covered in lush green forests. Representatives from their capital, Eir Asna, have yet to comment on this subject publicly.

On Fey Travel to the Material Plane

  Though the fey from the Scintillate are wily and unpredictable, the existence of laws that bind Aeyvis together means that they too are subjected to some semblance of order when visiting our material plane. Such laws appear to vary based on the specific genus of fairy person (otherwise known as their "court") but can be generalized by a few rules of thumb:
  • They emerge almost exclusively from forests marked as "fey-touched" [1] ;
  • The frequency of emergence correlates to certain seasons, weather conditions, and other natural phenomena [2] ; and
  • In periods of high fey activity they may also leave behind 'pockets' that lead from the to the Scintillate, "activated" by certain rituals [3] .
  • Based on a study of recorded interactions with the fey people (a very small sample size, due to the lack of reputable accounts) while the abilities of any given fey person vary wildly and almost seem to be tied to the specific personality and temperament of the person (an observation noted in Verkoska and Rondengo A Study on Innate Fey Magic), once fully immersed within the material plane their physicalities seem to adhere to the general limitations of their court. The known fey courts are as follows:

      [1] There is no scientific definition for a "fey-touched" forest, nor any objective distinction of such forests from regular biomes except for the recorded presence of fey; this definition mostly relies on the elves of Altones, who seem to refer to any "fey-touched" forest as the Altwood.   [2] Though there are no studies of the emergence of fey during natural disasters, storms, etc. it can be inferred that the energy imbalance in such conditions could be suitable for an emergence, as it has proven to be for other elemental or outer planes.   [3] Such "rituals" are infamous for being nonsensical, such as running around a tree several times and knocking or balancing a fruit on one's head for exactly ten seconds. It has been proposed that the illogical nature of the Scintillate is drawn to such rituals, making sense on that side of the planar portal but not on the material plane.

    On Unaffiliated Fey

      A hypothetical proposed by the aforementioned A Study on Innate Fey Magic is the existence of fey people unaffiliated with any courts, thus following their own sets of logic both in their home plane and in Aeyvis. Though there have been rumors of such fey, the most prominent of which revolve around the reported symbolism of the Helianthus a.k.a. Common Sunflower , there is no empirical evidence nor studies to back these claims, and until peer-reviewed research has been submitted the Gerceni Union Department of Sciences considers such claims invalid.
