Brute

Scarred and Strong

Brutes carry the blood of monstrous races long since driven from the world. Although human in appearance, brutes' sloping foreheads, jutting jaws, prominent teeth, and towering builds are the lingering legacy of their monstrous heritage. Minor deformities are common; more severe abnormalities typically result in death at a young age, often at the hands of the people around them. Brutes stand between 5 and 8 feet tall and usually weigh between 180 and 300 pounds. Taller brutes often slouch or hunch over to mask their unusual height.   Brutes feel emotion powerfully. Emotion doesn’t just quicken their pulse, it makes their bodies burn. An insult stings like acid, and sadness saps their strength. They laugh loudly and heartily, and simple bodily pleasures—feasting, drinking, wrestling, drumming, and wild dancing—fill their hearts with joy. They tend to be short-tempered and sometimes sullen, more inclined to action than contemplation and to fighting than arguing. The most accomplished brutes are those with enough self-control to get by in a civilized land.   Brutes do their best to blend in with normal human society. Whether proving themselves as capable laborers or scrabbling to survive in the slums of larger cities, brutes get by on their physical might, their endurance, and sheer determination.

I was, besides, endued with a figure hideously deformed and loathsome; I was not even of the same nature as man. I was more agile than they and could subsist upon coarser diet; I bore the extremes of heat and cold with less injury to my frame; my stature far exceeded theirs. When I looked around I saw and heard of none like me. Was I, then, a monster, a blot upon the earth, from which all men fled and whom all men disowned?
