Melrick Kurran
male human neutral good eldritch knight fighter/lore master wizard
Melrick's Story
Melrick was born to a well-to-do family in the Elysian city of Westport two and a half decades before the great wars. His father was involved in Westport's shipping trade and eventually became Harbormaster. The position was one of great distinction and earned much prestige and considerable wealth for the elder Master Kurran. As such, Melrick and his siblings were all raised in comfortable surroundings.
Much like the children of noblemen and women, Melrick was formally educated well into his adolescence. At the age of sixteen, he joined the city's military academy and continued his education there. He proved adept in the martial pursuits and after completing his tutelage, he joined the city guard.
When the Hordes came, Melrick immediately joined the Army of the King but he only saw one battle; the first Battle of Southgate. The disastrous rout at the hands of the horde proved decisive for King Aldon and nearly fatal for Melrick. The King withdrew his armies from the fight against the horde. Melrick, who had been grievously wounded in the fight, was transported back to Westport with the remaining forces.
Merlick spent several months recovering from his wounds. During that time, he grew increasingly concerned by the news of the war to the east and south. He voiced his frustration with the King's decision to withdraw from the fighting and prepare instead to defend Elysia proper should the horde turn their attention west to anyone who would listen. His intent to return to the fighting by any means necessary once he could was of great concern to his family.
During his convalescence, Melrick met Ariamus Brannersson, another native of Westport. The meeting changed Melrick's life and course forever. The wounded warrior had always been interested in the arcane arts. Ariamus was a wizard and he was a comrade of the powerful mage, Tissan Malaiason. Together, the two mages were part of elicit and underground forces fighting against the hordes throughout Azocar. Melrick joined their group for the remainder of the wars.
After the hordes were defeated and the Treaty of the Tasser Dale was signed, Melrick returned to Westport. Ariamus took on the task of tutoring his friend in the arcane arts and Melrick became his student. In the years following the wars, Melrick pursued two goals; increasing his arcane acumen and furthering the growth of the Society of the Silver Dragon in Westport and on Elysia.
About a decade after the wars, Melrick was given a very important mission by his guild. A rumor that one of the infamous Keys of Power had surfaced near Everlund and he was sent to retrieve it. His mission was to return to Westport and the guild headquarters with it. Unfortunately, at the very beginning of the return journey, Melrick and his bodyguards became trapped in a planar shift. They were transported into the realm of shadows where they were attacked by its denizens. Melrick fell in the battle and died.
Fortunately for him, his body again became trapped in the mists not long after the battle. It was transported back to the natural world and its reappearance was detected by his superiors. Because the item he had been carrying had disappeared during the battle, the Society of the Silver Dragon arranged for him to be resurrected so they could learn what happened.
The ordeal was traumatic for Melrick and he spent nearly a year recovering from it. Seeking closure, the introspective mage returned to the site of his death one year after for the anniversary.
Melrick's Description and Mannerisms
Melrick stands a little short of six feet tall. At 160 pounds, his frame is slender but appears capable. Though he's of average strength, he is nimble and fast. Melrick is clean-shaved and wears his blond hair past shoulder length and typically keeps it bound in a single pony-tail. It along with his pale skin and deep green eyes are typical of his Elysian parentage.
He typically dresses in muted earth tones. He wears a thin undergarment under his magical chain armor shirt and covers that with nondescript pullovers. When traveling, he normally dons a cloak. Dark breeches and dark brown leather boots complete his dress. His magical blade, a rapier named Steelwing and three daggers are always on his belt and he carries a small shield.
Melrick is never one to shy away from a discussion but he is very soft-spoken. His even temper and calm demeanor belie the compassion and caring he feels for the common man. Despite this, Melrick can be a bit haughty.
There are very few he considers his intellectual equals and he can be quite dismissive of those he doesn't. This is true even among his own family. As a result, though he adores his father, his relationship with him isn't nearly as full as is his friendship with his mentor. And his relationships with his siblings are cordial but cool, at best.
