Personal history

Born in a blizzard, Setting Sun was named for the shimmering amber colour of his left eye. His mother, Willow Shade (Willow) and his father Misty Veil (Mist) were a hunting family on the edge of their clan.. His mother knew he was destined for greatness with an eye resembling the sky at sunset. He was raised away from the other young tabaxi in his tribe, being brought off on hunting trips as soon as he could draw a bow. The boreal forest where the Sunswept Valley clan lived was home to many dangerous and bountiful beasts, and there Set honed his skills. On a fateful hunt, Set found himself and his father cornered by a dire wolf and his father fought to give his son time to escape. Set never looked back, sprinting and crying through the night. The boy wound up fearing the hunt from then on, until one day when he was summoned by the clan elders. A shaman of the tribe told Set of his destiny. His father, like all the men in his family before him, died defending his life. The shaman called him a 'Ward', and informed him that many other beings across the land share the same fate as him. Furious at this discovery, and determined not to die as his father had, Set abandoned his mother and siblings and ran off in to the night at only 13 years of age.   The young feline survived all the way to a small village on the southern border of the forest where he met a grizzled mercenary veteran who saw value in the tabaxi's eye. The mercenary took him under his wing with intention to sell him off at the next major city, but through chance glimpses, he saw the talent that Set possessed. With need for archer's in his company, Setting Sun became the youngest addition to the Blackfist mercenary company.   Over the years, Set proved himself an impressive soldier and as he grew, so to did his talent with the bow. Set never showed fear for men and soon gained a reputation for his accuracy and ruthlessness among his men. Rising through the ranks, the Tabaxi wound up in command of a regiment of 300 men - The Hollow. The Hollowmen were different, they were fiercely faithful for their captain and would fight to the death if it was Set's belief it would bring them victory. Not very long after, a Tabaxi wound up at Set's tent, fur as white as snow, and a youthful excitement about him. Set couldn't bring himself to have one of his own kind enslaved, especially after the opportunity that Euan Blackfist had given him, he took the young Tabaxi in. He taught Roving Floe everything he knew about how to fight, and he shaped the feline into the perfect warrior. The two fought alongside for nearly a decade before it happened.   In the midst of a blizzard, The Hollowmen marched in escape from a much greater foe. Determined to reach safety in the main divisions of the company on the other side, Set marched his men through the whiteout. Like flies, men dropped from the cold, horses slipped and broke legs, carts got stuck, and his men pleaded for mercy. Fearing the enemy on their tail, but with concern for his men, he decided there was no way they could be pursued in such a storm anyways, and despite the protest of a few, he ordered his men to make camp.    In the night, mayhem broke loose. Soldiers ambushed from all sides, burning tents, slaughtering men before they could even rise from their beds. Set emerged from his tent into a blinding inferno of smoke, flames, clashing swords, whipping snow, and the screams and cries of dying men. He saw ravens feasting on the still warm remains of men he had known for more than two decades. The birds seemed to mock him, as though begging him to shoo them away. Set drew his shortsword and prepared to rush in to battle, only stopped by Floe who had come to rescue him. Floe restrained Set and pleaded with him to escape with him so that they both may live, but Set saw the ravens amidst the flames and knew he couldn't. They argued and fought and in a blind rage, Set raked his claws across Floe's head, tearing all the way to bone and ripping loose chunks from his ear. In his broken state, Set didn't see the man retaliate, and as quickly as the ambush started, Set awoke. He saw the only Tabaxi he truly knew carrying him on his back. He saw their blood mixing in the snow, he saw the smoke on the horizon of the battle. Despite his resistance, despite maiming him, Floe had saved his life. In the distance, Set saw the ravens circling.   Years passed and the two of them never returned to the Blackfist company, they were deserters. Set knew how Euan dealt with deserters and feared retaliation. He covered his amber eye with a patch of leather and removed their markings from his clothes. A more humble job of guarding caravans would be the only life left for them to live.    Set could never escape the ravens, and before too long they spoke to him. Fey creatures, the nightmarish sort. Determined to drag him back in line with his destiny, they invaded his dreams and tormented him endlessly, eventually growing so bold as to land on him. Years of this torment has left him calloused to it, yet still the caw and sight of the birds sickens him.    Set cannot shake the sight of his men dying, he cannot forgive his mistake, and every day he sees the scars he gave his only friend, and they hurt him far more.
