Free Holds

A swath of land between Mallowhurst/Dormount Union and the Duchy of Faysea, this region has managed to remain largely independent of organized rule. Each city and village manages laws, order, and governance independently. A lack of economic possibility, difficult terrain, and stiff resistance have negated annexation attempts for decades. Sellswords, Assassins, Cults, and Mercenaries make their living in this lawless frontier. The Holds’ people are as hardy as the land, where crime is the primary source of income for most. Innocent people looking to make an honest living have mostly already migrated, following the assassination of “Poor Pyotr”, a martyr in local folklore who lived in squalor and raised awareness for poor people affected by the rampant crime. A number of crime syndicates vy for turf, while corrupted politicians maintain a two-faced facade under helping the poor but embezzle official funds.The majority of people here are criminal, and will do anything to survive, amass a fortune, or escape their debts in hopes of opportunity elsewhere. Highwaymen, Bandits, and even Pirates have found success here, and most work under the “protection” of the organized syndicates.
