Personal history
Growing up in House Rolt of Yartar as the fifth son in a family of eleven children meant that Cedes Rolt was never going to have the luxury to be first, and did not have the excuse of coming in last. Short of suspicious assassination attempts common in large noble families, Cedes was never going to inherit anything of worth from his household until he was far too old to use or appreciate it.
His options as a young man were to study something boring like history, literature, or cartography at a noble college; take up work somewhere in town at one of the more respectable hunting lodges or wine rooms; or declare himself a loyal squire to a famed knight. To Cedes, all of these options felt like they took advantage of his noble birth and set him up to fall short of any real achievement. Instead, Cedes departed from his family home in search of a respectable worker to pledge his loyalty to. He found such a man in Triboar, who was working as a smith. Cedes worked under a mentor for 6 years before he was recruited to work by the battlefield to help repair soldier's weapons and armor.
