Auril

Goddess of Winter

Auril is a goddess often concidered evil, and she's certainly capricious. Most who worship her do so out of fear or desire to keep her at bay. It's not unusual with small altars or even minor festivities in her honour, especially in the far north, just in the hopes that she will not make winter too harsh. Some celebrate Midwinter in her honour. Sacrifices are often made, though in many areas they are mostly kept symbolic. Som pleaces have their own celebrations, such as Auril's Blesstide in Waterdeep.

Realm

Auril's divine realm is Winter's Hall in the topmost layer of Pandemonium.

Worship

Auril's clergy are loosely organized, and the main goals of most followers is to intimidate common folk and make them venerate the Frostmaiden to avoid reprisals from her clergy, or to have them make donations to her church. Some of her powerful clerics accumulate impressive personal wealth in this manner, some of which they sacrifice as offerings to Auril. Her priests wear ice white robes with blue trim, and are easily identified by the dire warnings they proclaim of the wrath of Auril come the winter.

Auril, along with Malar, Umberlee, and their superior Talos, are members of the Deities of Fury. Umberlee and Auril cooperate with some degree of confidence, while Malar and Auril despise each other.
Much of Auril's power has been absorbed by Talos in the past couple of centuries, weakening the minor deity. Despite this, or perhaps as a result of it, Auril quietly syphon power from the slumbering deity Ulutiu who is in stasis under the Great Glacier.
Kossuth and Auril are mortal enemies, but their followers seldom come across each other. Sune opposes Auril, as she blames her for the destruction of much that was beautiful. Uthgar hated Auril as she turned the Elk Tribe away from his worship for a while.
