Common

The overall name for the language spoken almost everywhere on Faerûn. That said, the line between a strong dialect and a different language is somewhat fluid, and someone from one area might not fully understand someone from a very different area. And most places have a very distinct dialect, or language if you will, spoken among the locals in very informal contexts.
Someone proficient in common is assumed to also be so in the local dialects of wherever they have lived for any longer period of time. And they are perfectly able to understand dialects from the areas surrounding those places.
