Devil
During the Dawn Age, after the first mortal races had been created, the demons of the Abyss were a constant threat to creation. In an effort to stave them off, the gods created a special army of angels to combat them. The angels, led by Asmodeus, started the Bloodwar - a conflict that still rages. It is the ever-present fight between devils and demons.
However, the angels became corrupted by the closeness of the abyss and twisted into evil creatures. And so Asmodeus managed to trick the gods into a deal. There are plenty of mortals, he argued, that defy the gods and act against their wishes. Surely, they would behave much better if there was the threat of punishment if they strayed from the path. And Asmodeus graciously offered to provide such punishment for sinful souls. The gods agreed but hadn't counted on the fact that the former angels, now referred to as devils, would actively try to corrupt and tempt mortals. Instead of just being dissuasion, the devils tried to entice souls.
Devils are often twisted forms of life, the result of aeons close to the negative energy plane. Most of them have a frightening visage, but some are just twisted versions of their former angelic selves or are made to make people want to deal with them.
