The Scarlet Star Jubilee
At night, in the skies above Aland, the stars can be seen so clearly that explorers are able to travel using only the position of the constellations to guide them. In the continent of Bastique, prior to the rise of the Tupaulian Church, the people had their own names for the constellations and would worship them as Gods. The Armoury mountain range, and each individual mountain within it, got their names from the mythology around these celestial deities.
One such star is still celebrated in the southern city-state of Sylvahn. The Scarlet Star is rarely seen in the sky compared to it's sister stars. However, for one day in the middle of summer, the Scarlet Star glows brightly and becomes clearer and brighter than any other and is visible all over Aland.
The Scarlet Star features heavily in Sylvahnian art and music and can be seen on the city-state's flag. This is because the cities founder was guided to the spot where Syvahn would one day be built by this star.
Following a mass exodus of thousands of peasants, merchants and even a number of nobles from the city of Duble, led by Remi Lepelerin, the masses travelled across the continent in search of a new home. The Scarlet Star at the time was believed to only appear during times of great need to aid those who needed it most. With this in mind, Remi would lead his people, across mountains and miles of land, to the opposite end of the continent where he would finally settle and establish a camp near the ocean. This camp would one day grow into the port city of Sylvahn.
In recognition of the original founders' journey across the continent, the festival of the Scarlet Star is held every year. The festivities commence a week before the star is set to appear, the Prime Minister speaking at the opening ceremony and giving a speech about the importance of the festival, interspersed with statements that further their personal politics.
Once underway, the streets are lined with stalls selling food, alcohol and trinkets. Circus performers can be found throughout the city, juggling knives and breathing fire. Magicians are soon surrounded by their amazed audience, eager to see more of their parlour tricks. Music will be played morning, noon and night without care; musicians across the city will play a myriad of different songs, which coalesce into a jubilant yet disharmonious cacophony.
Decadence reigns during this week and drunk citizens litter the streets. It is the busiest time of the year for the cities guards who are on duty for the festival as they break up fights and escort the inebriated home.
This continues until the night of the final day. As darkness spreads across the sky like ink spilt across parchment, the Scarlet Star finally becomes visible above Sylvahn. The sounds of music, laughter and celebration that once filled the air now disappear, as all stop in a moment of silence and reverence. After a moment or two, a great cheer is let out and the Prime Minister, himself seeing double, calls an end to the festival for another year.
