Orlain - City of Life

Demographics

As befitting the capital of the Hasican empire, the majority of residents are of Hasican descent. As a trade hub and on the main Queensroads and rivers, there are many halflings, orcs and other humans plying their wares all over the streets of the city. The dwarves and elves don't have large presences in Orlain.

Government

The government of the city proper consists of the Council of Orlain, a collection of 27 elected provosts of the city's 27 wards. The requirement is that no provost can be of noble birth, and must serve for only 12 years. This doesn't keep power blocs from forming, as multiple families in the wards have kept fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters on the council for generations, effectively being noble dynasties themselves.

Defences

The major wall protects the city from the north, east and south. Each ring is on an artifical hill, rising above the wall. These, and the magic wards embedded in each wall, protect the city from the ground. A Dwarven bunked under the 18th ward protects the city from attacks underground. And the Krin Knights on their flying steeds protect the city from dragons, wyverns and other flying creatures.

Industry & Trade

Almost all trade in the empire flows through Orlain. Either from Acaban or Urzan or the Coast's trade hubs, but at some point any gold coin from anywhere in the world is touched by banker's hands in Orlain.

Infrastructure

As the city is divided into 5 rings, there's roughly 7 wards per ring. The 5th, outside ring, technically exists outside of the city proper, and the main walls occupy space between the 4th and 5th wall. There's walls between each ring, as the city expanded in the past each ringwall was abandoned in favor of new construction. The 5th ring hasn't been encircled with protection as the Empire is too weak and rife with infighting to take on construction of the level required.
