Kyer Yowan
Dwarf Fortress City on the northern coast
For much of its history, the dwarven city of Kyer Yowan was an unwelcoming place for travellers. Now, the common folk, once confined to the undercrofts of the colossal fortress from which it derives it's name, are a curious people, in equal parts awed and wary of the world beyond the city limits. A city of builders and craftsmen, Kyer artefacts are incredibly highly sought after abroad for their unmatched quality. For much of history the ruling powers forbade citizens to travel or to accept visitors to the city, so trade was only in smuggled items, increasing their value still further.
The Order of Yowan, the messengers of the mysterious cabal of magical beings who once ruled from the high fortress, are still a common sight within the city limits. Once enforcers, feared for their skill in magic and their terrible cruelty, their powers have waned as a madness has engulfed them. Though commonly referred to by locals and visitors alike as the "Daft Monks" due to the bizarre activities they engage in - there is still a wary respect for The Order, reinforced by the occasional conversion of a hitherto sane individual, a magical feat, or a violent act. It is unknown what has become of the cabal they serve as their influence has dwindled. The fortress above remains impenetrable, protected by a magical barrier through which living beings cannot pass.
So it is that the crafting guilds now share power and seek to bring prosperity through trade with the outside world. As a monument to their craftsmanship they built the Castle of Guilds, mimicking the style of the far countries. Humble next to the great fort, it is nonetheless striking in its beauty.
