Alicorn (Ae-luh-corn)
Properties
Origin & Source
Alicorn is the bioorganic substance from which unicorn horn is made and can only be sourced from a purebred unicorn
Life & Expiration
Alicorn is extremely stable with daily exposure to ambient moonlight or ambient hope.
History & Usage
Everyday use
- Magical semiconductors
- Powerful spellcasting foci
Refinement
Alicorn horn has a multitude of magical and practical uses depending upon the method of refinement:
- When ground into a fine powder and applied as a salve or consumed, alicorn heals all wounds
- When refined and smelted with mererid or suspirium it acts as an incredibly powerful magical semiconductor
Manufacturing & Products
- Frisson (shards) of alicorn can be smelted into magical semiconductors
- Morceau (larger fragments) can be smelted into hilts for spellswords
Hazards
Because alicorn must be freely given or collected, use of stolen alicorn can have a number of consequences varying in severity:
- If simply stolen, the user will suffer cursed luck for as long as they're in possession of the alicorn. They will receive their wildest dreams at an increasingly steep cost until the horn is returned.
- If given freely and misused, (the holder breaks their word to a unicorn, attempts to use the alicorn specimen for ill, etc) specimen is rendered dull and magically inert.
- If taken by force or with violence, the user will fall ill with an incurable magical sickness as the horn draws in all the ambient hope around them (mortality rate in these cases greater than 60%). The only cure in this event is a true change of heart and the return of the undamaged horn.
