Bathsheba Amere

Lady Bathsheba Flordelis Amere (a.k.a. Vermilia, Yrsa, Berengaria,)

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Though the Ameres began early on in Lychnis' history as simple farmers working a tract of land, the earliest traceable members of the Amere family (brothers Honorat and Rascende) used a combination of their knowledge of the land and natural fae magics, thus creating the blood rose, which would go on to become the official flower of Lychnis when it fell under Camelot's rule in 1000 PA. Since then, the Ameres have been an important family to Lychnis and to the kingdom of Camelot, often occupying high ranking positions or in possession of titles.   Bathsheba Flordelis Amere is the middle child of Donadei Amere and Sojourne Amere (nee Seiliegh) IV, following brothers Coeur and Cousteix. As the only female child born to the modern day-Ameres, Donadei saw an opportunity to solidify his family's position in Camelot by ensuring that his daughter married well - into Camelot's royal family, in fact. Donadei bided his time until approximately 5 AA, when his chance came: he offered her hand to much older neighbor and brother of the freshly Widowed Queen of Camelot, Knight 1st Class Lord Ser Leodegrance Lufu. Though Duke Leodegrance accepted the offer, when confronted and surprised with then 15 year old Bathsheba Ser Leo found that his connection to her was (obviously) closer to that of a best friend or mentor than a husband - partially because of their sizable age gap, and partially because of Leo's own romantic and sexual proclivities, which leant more toward his fellow Knights than the Summer Rose of Lychnis. Feeling used and betrayed by her own family, the young Bathsheba had absolutely no desired to be married to anyone, let alone a man 20 years her senior (however kind he may be). The two struck a deal: she would pose as his fiancee long enough to dispel any questions about his eternal bachelorhood and to seek a way for her to escape the constraints of royal life. Ser Leo spoke with his sister the Queen, who was furious to hear that a young farm girl who reminded her of herself had been forced into a marriage that was more about cleverness than love, and agreed to lend the full power of Camelot's law to assist his never-to-be bride.   With the aid of the Queen and Ser Leo Bathsheba stole away from Lychnis one morning at dawn with provisions enough to last her two weeks on her own, the clothes and red riding cloak on her back, a satchel full of magical components, and a notebook she made herself. To buy her time once she was discovered missing, the Queen visited her childhood home to have a pointed conversation with her father the Duke and then-Marchioness of Lychnis, Donadei Amere himself. The Widowed Queen never raised her voice as she reprimanded her own father, nor as she systematically stripped the Ameres of the Marchionessy on the grounds of dishonesty and unreliability between their families, which would surely mean discord for Camelot. The newly demoted Earl of Lychnis could say nothing of the dressing down or his only daughters whereabouts, of which he is still unaware to this day.   Bathsheba wandered for some time on her own, first as far south as she could go without leaving the boundaries of Albion itself then working her way westward toward the land of Broceliande, from which the Ameres were said to come to Albion originally - on her journey, however, her course took her into the heart of the recently discovered Uncanny Valley, a location that had become sort of a ghost story to the people of Camelot. Determined to find the so-called Uncanny and learn who they really were as a people, Bathsheba stubbornly stayed in the Valley with the constant feeling of watchful eyes nearby and made her solitary living off the land for an entire year before one of their number approached her, impressed with both her skills as a naturalist and the care she had shown with their land, never taking more than was needed or could be spared. She was brought before their leader Aylward Molthoe and, after speaking the High Druidic tongue of Old Broceliande and managing to create a linguistic connection, was given a place in their society. Bathsheba took the name Vermilia as a reminder of her origins and began in earnest to assimilate into Uncanny society. She has not returned home in 15 years, though she does make her way to Lychnis every spring to visit Ser Leo, pay her respects to the Queen and the royal family, and see the first blood bloom of the season.   Over time Vermilia has received the honor of multiple ritual tattoos denoting her as a valued member of society - through a combination of her particular fae magic and her unique access to Uncanny biology, she has become a healer and naturalist seeking to better life for the Uncanny and help break the cultural belief that they are somehow imperfect or corrupted.
