Lorath
They say that the storms perpetually plaguing this coastal city are its natural defense against fairweather friends. This has held true since the city was raised at the very edge of the sea. It's most well known for its tempestuous squalls, white water, black foam and prodigious stables. Located at the easternmost edge of the city and furthest from the roaring white waves, the enormous stable consumes the entirety of one of the modest city blocks. Hard, dark, desiccated driftwood has been thatched together to shape the walls and stalls. Though there is no visible mortar the structure stands straight and sturdy in the eternal black mud that cakes the roads in every direction, getting thicker and grayer and more demanding of attention the closer one comes to the sea wall.
Government
Earl Ivor of Lorath is responsible for the running of the settlement - taxation is limited only to what is necessary to pay back to Camelot in exchange for help from its soldiers if needed, and the city itself largely relies upon tourism to fund itself while it relies on its natural geography to protect itself.
Defences
- Unscalable cliff face marks the city's Western border
Infrastructure
- Ground wells
- Aqueduct system
- Windmills
- Sewer system
- Roughly hewn roads
- Docks at the eastern edge of the city allow residents to traverse the Exhydrian safely
Points of interest
● The sea is the color of porcelain everywhere but at their crest, where the foam turns black.
● The sound of waves crashing against the cliffside can be heard from everywhere within the city. It’s especially loud near the stables.
● The mud is so thick and substantial it appears that most who are able choose to navigate the city on horseback.
Architecture
Driftwood has proven to be the only building material that can withstand the assault of wind and rain that typically falls on the seaside village of Lorath. Most buildings and structures are made from the same material, and municipal restoration projects are constantly underway to keep the wood from rotting and weakening. Driftwood is supplemented by black stone harvested from the cliff's edge.
Geography
Lorath is carved into a black cliff-face high above the Exhydrian Sea. Most of their freshwater is collected from rainfall or brought in from ground wells that have been dug throughout the city and distributed by aqueduct.
Climate
Due to its proximity to the raging sea of Exhydria, Lorath is constantly subjected to inclement weather in the forms of torrential rain, thunder and lightning, low visibility, and low pressure systems.
Natural Resources
Lorath is known for its thoroughbred draught horses, which are capable of traversing the thick, sucking mud that covers the ground. They're generally stabled with the local farrier and cost more than a pretty penny to acquire for one's self.
