Uncanny

It is believed but not proved that the Uncanny were corrupted during process of the Apostasy - they are best classified as humanoid but, vitally, are no longer human. Those whose genetic structure was not corrupted by the process report feelings of extreme, unplaceable discomfort in the presence of the Uncanny, potentially due to an hereditary ancient fear whose source we have forgotten.

Basic Information

Anatomy

  • Because they are humanoid but not longer human if ever they were, the Uncanny do not have "whites" of their eyes. They are all iris and typically heterochromatic.

Behaviour

Though we don't know how, the Uncanny are aware of their mortal predecessors - it is a widespread cultural belief that they are mortals who were cursed during the Apostasy and that only a lifetime of penance paid to the land can break it. Because they are aware of the ways in which they differ from and discomfit their mortal predecessors, The Uncanny have defaced any remaining artwork or statuary from the Pre-Apostasy era.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

  • Because they do not have whites of their eyes to communicate non verbally, the Uncanny have developed a system of multi-tonal echolocation to communicate in code and across great distances.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

The Uncanny revere those who look most like their mortal counterparts - those with symmetrical features, traditionally mortal size and stature, etc.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Likely as a result of the influence of Myrrdin on early Uncanny society combined with the wealth of knowledge contained in both the Valley's ancient ruins and its Aylward, Molthoe, The Uncanny speak primarily Old High Broceliandic or its modern Uncanny derivative. While they do possess a written language, it's one primarily of symbols derived from Old High Broceliandic. Highly educated Uncanny with access to Ruin Lore may also be fluent and/or literate in Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Ancient Greek, or English. Limited exposure to the "Unblemished World" means that very few speak the Common and Undercommon tongues of Albion.
