Woodwright
Meta Quote: The author's surname is purely coincidental! He’d rather be a Redsmith!A Woodwright is a skilled craftsperson, who works with wood to make items that any of the woodworking "wrights" can, except for Coopers, Shipwrights and Cartwrights. (Wheelwrights make the wheels for carts. )Woodwrights might be the only thing avabile and it might not even be viable to have any other wood related craft unless it is outside the remit of the Woodwrights themselves.
- Woodright - a term for people who make objects such as bowls plates, spoons forks or handles to have metal worked knife blades or fork tines joined to them
- Arkwright - Maker of boxes and crates.
- Millwright - Makes the wooden structure for mills
- Ploughwright - Makes the Wooden part for a plough to be drawn by animals
- Joiner - Maker or Furniture and joins wood.
Career
Qualifications
The Woodwright must be qualified in all woodworking that they are expected to deal with. They would be apprenticed to a mentor and would only be allowed to set up in business once the mentor is satisfied that their work is up to standard.
If the businesses were started before the University they would not have a mark. If the business was set up after the University came in to bring it would have the University Mark.
Career Progression
Progress ion of any trade that involves woodworking of any kind comes from the work that they do and its quality. This can be in the form of commissions or orders. For example items such as furniture or carts. If the products are of good quality and suitable for the uses intended, this may not only gain future patronage from that customer. It may also get them spreading good words about the trader that may gain them more custom. For example coopers who make tankards for drinking vessels may be asked to provide such for inns and eateries. This can apply to traders who have the mark, as well as those who do not, as word of mouth is a powerful method of gaining trade.
Perception
Purpose
Woodwrights are expected to make wooden items, they are skilled crafts persons hence the word wood before the suffix wright both saying wood. They are the ones who are making items that are complex such as wagon wheels. Although they can also make functional items such as drinking vessels, kitchenware and cutlery.
Social Status
The Woodwrights are often a go to when it is not clear which trade to go to or if the other trades persons have a lot on their plate. Or, as in the case of a Cartwright, they cannot complete the task because they cannot make wheels.
Operations
Tools
Any hand tool regarded for use for woodworking. (Co Writer - This is stating the ruddy obvious mate!)
Materials
They work with maple as it is most widely used and is more widley grown than other wood. Trees grown for use by Woodrights are only maple. Other trees area available for the purposes of food production. These woods tend to be more expensive, due to the lack of supply. When other types of wood are used it is only for commissions and can lead to the woodwright leading a more prosperous life until the money dries up from the commission.
