Hench

Nestled in the crook of the Hazenbough's arms, Hench began as a haven for all those who wished to escape their old lives in Umalya. With the myriad disturbing legends of the ancient forest looming over it, few of the powers to the west had much interest in pouring their resources into asserting control over the town. Hench earned its name by first building a reputation - if you need a job done, and don't care for questions, you'll find no shortage of candidates in 'the town for hire'. Beyond the bureaucracy of the west, it quickly became a haven not only for those wishing to escape oppression and law enforcement, but also for the fortunes whose owners balked at the idea of paying taxes. As the years passed, and Hench began to establish itself as a source of lumber and arcane ores, the corpocrats of Mar Ghel began to take more notice. Little by little, their influence reached out across the plains until it could clutch at the industries of the fledgling town.   Nowadays Hench is still ostensibly a free settlement, but its wheels turns by the will of the Ghelian guilds and royals, who exert full control over its exports. The day to day lives of the henchfolk have not changed dramatically, as the royals are keen that the allure of the town continues to draw settlers to expand its mining and forestry, effectively building an outpost that is Mar Ghel in all but name.
