The Mileg Area Health Complex ("Mill-egg")
In the southwest of Alfuria exists a large (mostly) dried area that was once an inland sea. For the past few dozen eons, the region has been known for two things; mud and the Sisters of the Swamp. Both affect what the Mileg Health Complex is.
The Mileg area receives a lot of rain, something that keeps the muddy crater...moist. It also presented a challenge for the creation of one of Alfur's largest hospitals. The rising population of the Sisters of the Swamp desired a headquarters that could be used for training, experimentation and research, and housing a large number of patients with some of the most odd and challenging health problems. A project within the actual city of Mileg, also known as Mida Mileg, was considered but it was found to be unrealistic due to size. Instead, an area was chosen about 20 miles north east of the city. This was over the edge of the Mileg crater's rim and within the muddy wastes beyond. Even though there was technically plenty of open space, how could a large scale megahospital be built here? An answer came quickly due to local architectural designers. Stilts would support the sprawling building complex. In theory the bottom surfaces of the health complex wouldn't have to be too high off of the muddy ground since water levels in the area rarely exceeded a few inches, but the classical Alfurian overprotective nature came into the decision to elevate the structure to 35 feet high. Instead of straight pillars to support the building projects, interconnected diagonal supports were used. The higher elevation of the complex left plenty of room for powerlines, pipes, and service catwalks to span between the grids of stilts. Construction was unusually slow because the engineers wanted to ensure all support structures were firmly settled deep within the mud. Even though most struts were rooted over 50 feet down and used shapes to increase friction and load bearing, the large weight of the complex would still be literally floating in mud, in a way. The mud of Mileg isn't quite liquid past an average of 12 feet down, but it isn't exactly solid either.
It took eight years before the final inspections cleared the complex. The initial building featured a central hub building that was the tallest structure of the construct. Most of this space was used for hangar areas and long range communications. As well, even though the complex featured no offensive weapons, the central short tower housed the primary shield manipulators. This stems from an ancient sad fact that Alfurian hospitals have been primary targets during warfare. The shields are rated to withstand medium levels of orbital bombardment, though the health complex is near enough to Mida Mileg to gain protection too from the city's HAOB satellite network. With smooth sides that taper as they go up, the central tower somewhat resembles an Earthly nuclear powerplant cooling tower. There are six hangars that allow medical craft to enter swiftly.
Below the hangars are situated the construct's equivalent of an emergency room. The design lends itself to efficient movement of patients who are in critical condition, since they can be offloaded from an inbound aircraft and then sent down an elevator directly into operating rooms. Most of the complex's experienced Sisters are found here. From the central tower span six causeways. These tunnel-like passages travel to six smaller hubs of the hospital. Though smaller than the central building, these hubs house several specialized medical centers. Two of the six secondary buildings are devoted to medical research, where the Sisters of the Swamp work with The Department of sovex Mastery to study some of the more supernatural aspects of Alfur's infamous particles. As well as being connected to the central tower, each smaller structure is connected by an outlaying ring of corridors that allow travel from hub to hub without needing to go to the central hospital. Also, completed a year after the hospital complex began operations, a four lane stilt elevated roadway was completed from Mida Mileg to the Sisters' Hospital. It arrives at the south-west hub, one that also serves as a hotel for the families of patients. Along the causeways are purpose built connection sockets so that (if needed) additional even smaller hubs can be added in the future. This ensures that even while the Alfurian population continues to grow, the facility will remain relevant for decades to come. The health complex is only comparable to some of the larger hospitals of the largest Alfurian cities, and is by far the largest in the south of the home continent.
